Refractometers

A refractometer measures how light propagates through a medium, also known as an index of refraction. These handheld instruments are used to measure sugar content or specific gravity. Commonly used in vineyards and home brewing, a refractometer measures specific gravity before fermentation to determine the concentration of fermentable sugars. They are also used in aquariums to measure the salinity and specific gravity in the tank. These instruments can be used to measure concentrations of sugar, salt and lubricant/cutting fluid as well as battery coolant/glycol freeze points. The lens on the refractometer has a simple focus adjustment to view the measurement scale, where the concentration is determined by the location of the shadowline.
