The In-Situ Level TROLL 400 Water Level Logger eliminates problems commonly found in the industry while also providing the accuracy, reliability and ease of use needed for long-term water level monitoring. Its titanium construction outlasts specially-coated data loggers. Enhanced electronic and sensor design provide long-term accuracy with internal memory of 130,000 data points and options of internal or external power. The Twist-Lock connector eliminates worries of lost data or communication failure while procedural and data errors are reduced through easy to use Windows-based software. The Level TROLL 400 provides the confidence needed to perform highly accurate water level studies with a complete and integrated solution.

The In-Situ Level TROLL 400 Water Level Logger instrument comes standard with the ability to communicate via Modbus, 4-20mA, SDI-12 and RS-485/232. Pressure sensor accuracy has been verified to meet or exceed 0.1% of full-scale operation, while maintaining one of the smallest sensor diameters in the industry. The instrument incorporates a fully sealed power cell, warranted to operate for a minimum of 5 years or 1,000,000 readings, whichever comes first. Long-term deployment is further assured with optional external power accessories. The Level TROLL 400 can be deployed with either suspension wire or direct read cable using the In-Situ Twist-Lock connector. An optional external barometer (BaroTROLL) is available for use with the Level TROLL 400, with seamless integration of barometric pressure compensation performed through In-Situ's Baro Merge software.

How accurate is this level logger?
The In-Situ Level TROLL 400 is accurate to +/- 0.05% FS at 15 degrees Celsius, and +/-0.1% FS at all other temperature ranges.
What does 0.05% FS accuracy mean?
FS stands for Full Scale. +/- 0.05% FS accuracy means that the accuracy will depend on how large the measuring range will is. The 35 ft sensor will be accurate to 0.05%*35 = +/-0.0175 ft. The 1120 ft sensor will be accurate to 0.05%*1120 = +/-0.56 ft.

CrowdHydrology sources water level data from public's text messages

Chris Lowry’s idea was simple: set up staff gauges on local streams and leave a sign requesting passersby read the water level and text the data to a phone number. Data from text messages would be recorded and then posted to a website for public use. It was the beginning of CrowdHydrology , a crowdsourcing project that recently gained U.S. Geological Survey support for expansion into several Midwest states. Though it won’t generate as much data as official USGS stream gauges, the project will generate data points that supplement those lost from official gauges shut down following federal budget cuts. Lowry, an assistant professor of geology at the University at Buffalo, set up eight pilot sites in New York in 2011 in an attempt to crowdsource water level data.
