The iSitu App (available in the Apple Itunes Store) is compatible with IOS 6.0 and later. iPhone 4S, iPod Touch 5, and iPad 3 or later versions will all run the app.

The smarTROLL RDO can take 1 reading every 10 seconds. All data are logged to the Apple device via Bluetooth.

RDO stands for Rugged Dissolved Oxygen. This probe is an optical sensor, which means it does use luminescence to determine dissolved oxygen concentrations.

A report released by the Mowat Centre and the Council of the Great Lakes Region finds that lower water levels in the Great Lakes could cost the Canadian economy $10 billion over the next 15 years, according to The Barrie Examiner . Each summer, deep ocean currents pull low-oxygen, high-nutrient water up onto Oregon's coastal shelf. This upwelled water is often implicated in the seasonal hypoxia that has become more frequent in the state's coastal waters. But a recent study of three summers of data from the ocean floor suggest that the upwelled water may also be the reason that matters aren't worse. In an age of connectivity, now even water quality technicians can tap and swipe their Apple devices while taking spot samples in the field. “We have all grown to expect some of the functionality you get with a smartphone,” said Cristina Windsor, In-Situ technical marketing specialist. In-Situ’s new smarTROLL water quality sampling system delivers that functionality. It combines a dissolved oxygen sensor or multiparameter sonde with an Apple iPad, iPod or iPhone to create a handheld sampling system. A special application designed for Apple devices called iSitu allows users to communicate with the sonde and view data.  Windsor said In-Situ programmers took cues from Apple when building the application.  “What we tried to do was design that usability into an app,” she said.
