Details

The Juniper Systems Archer 2 is a rugged handheld computer that provides a mobile solution for on-the-go professionals that require reliability, speed and resistivity to the harshest of field conditions. Encased in a durable plastic in a shear-proof and shock-resistant outer layer, the handheld is IP68 waterproof and dustproof rated, shockproof from 5 feet drops onto concrete, and tested to MIL-STD-810G standards. These standards test against every environmental factor that could affect the unit's performance, including pressure, temperature, shock, dust, vibrations and water immersions.

Specifically designed to boost productivity, the Archer 2 runs a Microsoft Windows embedded operating system and speedy 1.0 GHz ARM Cortex A8 i.MX53 processor. Access to data files is easy as the handheld includes Microsoft Office Mobile 2010 with Word Mobile, Excel Mobile, PowerPoint Mobile and Outlook Mobile.  A memory of 512 MB RAM and 8 GB of storage provide plenty of storage space, but just in case, a user-accessible micro SD/SDHC slot is available for data intensive projects. Additionally, a USB host, 9-pin connector, 12/24 VDC jack output, audio jack output and USB client port are included for a greater range of serial communication capabilities.

The crystal-clear 4.3 inch LCD display can be viewed in portrait or landscape orientations. Built under a chemically-strengthened glass, the scratch-resistant screen has a projected capacitive touch interface that is "optically bonded" to the display for increased visibility. The numeric keyboard features adjustable LED backlit keys to quickly enter in data. Optimized for excellent performance in cold temperatures, the intelligent Li-Ion battery lasts up to 20 hours and recharges in 2 to 4 hours.

Eastern Brook Trout Study Peers Into Warming’s Impact On Survivability

The Eastern brook trout is common today in Massachusetts streams, but due to a warming climate and more frequent flooding events, it may vanish in as few as 15 years if the species fails to evolve rapidly, scientists say. But Ben Letcher, ecologist at the U.S. Geological Survey and adjunct faculty in environmental conservation at the University of Massachusetts - Amherst, believes that a better understanding of the effects of climate change on Eastern brook trout may help the fish avoid an untimely demise. “The Holy Grail in evolutionary ecology for a species like this is answering the question: How fit are individual fish and what makes them fit?” says Letcher. “We want to look at a variety of potential drivers and see which characteristics lead to success for Eastern brook trout.

Juniper Systems Archer 2 handheld computer: Rugged construction, bright screen, long battery life

The Juniper Systems Archer 2 is an impressively rugged handheld computer that offers users flexibility, ultra-long battery life and features that make it easy to use. “An underlying theme with all our products — they’re all meant to be ultra-rugged,” said Trevor Brown, natural resources market manager with Juniper Systems. “So we’ve had them thrown off buildings, put in concrete or launched. Every single unit is leak-checked, and we do substantial drop testing of all our products” to mimic real-world conditions. He pointed to a video of another Juniper Systems product, the Mesa , being put through extreme testing. Brown says the company does a lot of things that don’t make it into marketing videos, like using plastics that are ruggedized to high standards.

Colorado River Fish Contain Levels Of Selenium, Mercury

Largely seen as pristine and relatively untouched by human activity thanks to its protected status, the portion of the Colorado River flowing through Grand Canyon National Park is anything but, according to recently published research. This is evidenced by high levels of selenium and mercury found in the fishes there. Scientists from many institutions were involved in the years-long work, full results of which have been published in the journal Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. It was led by the U.S. Geological Survey, but perhaps the contributors from Idaho State University got the best end of the stick. They were looking into the food webs of the river to evaluate concentrations of selenium and mercury gathering in fish.
