Details

The Mesa Rugged Notepad combines the benefits of a tablet PC and rugged handheld computer in a sleek and user-friendly design. Weighing just under two pounds, the notepad is easy to grip and resists impacts due to its highly absorbing bumpers. Many environmental factors such as dust, water intrusions, pressure from high altitude, extreme temperatures, water immersions, and drops can affect the performance of these devices. The Mesa however, is built to an IP67 waterproof and dustproof rating, tested to MIL-STD-810G standards and approved for the Class I Division 2 non-incendive rating for use in hazardous locations.

A durable and lasting solution for harsh field environments, the Mesa is built tough from the inside out. Containing 256 MB RAM and 4 GB of flash storage, it leaves plenty of room to capture and process files and images. The built-in Microsoft Windows embedded handheld 6.5 operating system and 806 MHz processor ensure that applications run smoothly for prompt decision-making and data modification.

The intelligent Li-Ion battery operates the system for up to 16 hours on full charge, and recharges in just 2 to 4 hours. Two warm-swappable battery slots allow for batteries to easily be replaced without losing data or powering off the unit. The 5.7" responsive touchscreen features a high visibility LCD display that adjusts to movements by choosing a portrait or landscape orientation for the best viewing experience. A total of 15 buttons including the five-way directional navpad and 6 user-reassignable control buttons enable easy navigation through menu options. The unique custom home screen provides quick access to the most-used device functions. User-defined shortcuts and 11 screen gadgets control wireless connections, GPS, texting, email, calendar and power functions.

Serial communication capabilities include several outer ports like a USB host and audio jack that support connectivity to other machines. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth communications come standard with all Mesa models for data management in real-time. Three Mesa models are offered to deliver the best results and the highest level of efficiency. The standard model comes with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless technology. In addition to these communication functions, the Geo model offers an auto-focusing 3.2 MP camera as well as Juniper Geotagging that embed and emboss photos with date, time and GPS position. This GPS function features a 2-5 meter typical accuracy and integrated real-time SBAS. The most advanced model, the Geo 3G, also includes a 3G GSM Modem that is AT&T network approved. A 1D/2D barcode imager can also be paired with any Mesa notepad.

Eastern Brook Trout Study Peers Into Warming’s Impact On Survivability

The Eastern brook trout is common today in Massachusetts streams, but due to a warming climate and more frequent flooding events, it may vanish in as few as 15 years if the species fails to evolve rapidly, scientists say. But Ben Letcher, ecologist at the U.S. Geological Survey and adjunct faculty in environmental conservation at the University of Massachusetts - Amherst, believes that a better understanding of the effects of climate change on Eastern brook trout may help the fish avoid an untimely demise. “The Holy Grail in evolutionary ecology for a species like this is answering the question: How fit are individual fish and what makes them fit?” says Letcher. “We want to look at a variety of potential drivers and see which characteristics lead to success for Eastern brook trout.

Army Corps of Engineers Protects River Wildlife

A complex series of locks and dams up and down the Ohio River enable interstate commerce, travel and recreation by maintaining a usable pathway for watercraft, but come with the inevitable byproducts of disrupting the river’s natural systems. To combat this, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers uses a complex monitoring and response technology designed to minimize the negative impacts of dredging on the river ecosystem. Steven Foster, a limnologist with the Corps Water Quality Team, works at the Robert C. Byrd Lock and Dam in Gallipolis Ferry, West Virginia. He said one key area he focuses on is the welfare of mussels in the river. River dredging can smother mussel beds, so Foster and the team of engineers monitor the beds to ensure their safety.

Researchers Track Glacial Meltwater On Its Surprising Journey

While the scientific community has formed its consensus on how ice sheets are shrinking in and around Greenland, some researchers are tracking what happens to the meltwater as it drains into the ocean each summer. Their study, published in Nature Geoscience by an interdisciplinary team of biologists, oceanographers and hydrologists, used computer models to simulate the meltwater to see where currents take it and what effect it could have on the ocean. Renato Castelao, one of the researchers and an associate professor of marine science for the University of Georgia, said one of the biggest discoveries of the study was the surprising final destinations of the ice sheets as they melt into the ocean each summer.
