Measure weather where it really matters - at the track!

  • Measures moisture content (grains),air density,relative air density(RAD),realitive humidity,temperature,barometric pressure,wind speed and much more - 14 measurements in all

The next generation of track weather monitoring is the here with the Kestrel 5100 Weather Meter.

When winning matters, take the Kestrel 5100 for a ride. The Kestrel 5100 is just as accurate, reliable and user-friendly as the original Kestrel 4250. It measures moisture content in grains, air density, relative air density, humidity and other critical factors. Count on it for the information you need to make perfect ET predictions and performance-maximizing tuning and jetting decisions.

The Kestrel 5 Series platform adds many new features and options. If you're familiar with the Kestrel 4500, the first thing you'll notice is the larger, higher-resolution and contrast display and improved font readability. The Kestrel 5 series also includes a built-in dual color backlight, extra-strong polycarbonate lens and AA battery operation.

Like all Kestrel meters, the Kestrel 5100 is drop-proof, dust-proof, waterproof and able to withstand harsh environments without damage - so it can race as hard as you do, wherever you do. A range of carry pouch options makes it even easier to take your Kestrel meter with you.

The compact, portable design makes this unit easy to take right to the track - exactly where you need to get the most accurate and race-relevant measurements.

USB Data Transfer Cable
Low profile, lightweight, waterproof cable provides wired connectivity to Windows and Mac computers for fast data uploads and firmware updates. Compatible with every model in the Kestrel 5 Series.

Sleek, rugged tripod vane mount
Small, secure, robust vane mount turns any Kestrel 5 Series meter into a portable weather station that remains oriented into the wind. (Included in some models where noted, otherwise sold as optional accessory.)

Large, high contrast screen
Easily readable text in almost any setting, including bright sunlight, with more visible information on the screen at all times. This high-resolution display is easy on the eyes, allowing you to get more information from customizable user screens, charting and graphing options without causing eye strain or fatigue.

Dual color backlight
Toggle backlight color between standard white and night-vision-preserving red (NV). The red NV backlight features an optical wavelength selected to help users sustain natural night vision and reduced brightness to avoid detection during night maneuvers.

Secure battery door
Large, O-ring sealed door provides easy, tool-free battery access.

Scratch and breakage-resistant window
Rigid, polycarbonate lens with scratch-coating protects the display from damage.

Corrosion-resistant battery compartment
Battery is isolated from electronics, reducing damage in the event of a battery leak. (Note - Lithium AA batteries strongly recommended to avoid battery leakage altogether.)

Intuitive user-interface
Icon-based navigation, intuitive keypad, and multiple languages make the Kestrel a breeze to use.

Boise River Watershed Watch Shows Volunteers Issues River Faces

Having just wrapped up its ninth year, the Boise River Watershed Watch program is an increasingly popular citizen science program in Boise, Idaho. It takes interested volunteers and joins them with expert scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) who teach them about the river’s health and sampling water quality using transparency tubes, dip nets and chemical test kits. “Our focus is to educate folks on the parameters that we measure, to give them an idea of the river’s health,” said Tim Merrick, public information officer at the USGS’ Idaho Water Science Center. “So they can collect data on the river’s conditions and get plugged in.

New Benthic Underwater Microscope Captures Coral Wars

Researchers from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California - San Diego have designed and built a diver-operated underwater microscope to study millimeter-scale processes as they naturally occur on the seafloor. The research team has observed coral turf wars, coral polyp “kissing” and much more using the new microscopic technology. Many important biological processes in the ocean take place at microscopic scales, but when scientists remove organisms from their native habitats to study them in the lab, much of the information and its context are lost. In a quest to overcome this challenge, Scripps oceanographers developed the new type of underwater microscope to image marine microorganisms in their natural settings without disturbing them.

First Environmental Monitoring System For Baltimore’s Inner Harbor

Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and the rivers that flow into it are important sources of water to Chesapeake Bay, popular recreation sites and the targets of an ambitious clean-up plan. But the city has for some time lacked an environmental monitoring system for tracking water quality in the harbor continuously. That is about to change, thanks to a collaboration between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It will lead to the new installation of a suite of sensors that will provide the public and scientists with the first comprehensive, real time look at water quality in the harbor.
