NexSens AccuStage Absolute Water Level Sensor

Details

The NexSens AccuStage non-directional wave sensor is based on a sealed (absolute) pressure transducer mounted in a fixed position on the bottom of a body of water. The sensor samples 1024 data points over a 4 minute period at a rate of 4 Hz. This data is stored in the SDL500 data logger and transmitted in real-time when configured for radio, cellular, or Iridium satellite telemetry.

iChart software processes the data for significant wave height (defined as the average height of the tallest 1/3 waves). Both crests (relative maximums) and troughs (relative minimums) are determined and the difference results in wave height. The tallest one third of these wave heights are then averaged to yield significant wave height.

A Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is applied to the data to determine dominant wave period (wave with maximum energy). The real and imaginary parts are scaled by half the number of points, and the second half of the transformed points are dropped. From the remaining 512 points, the non-directional spectrum is calculated. The spectrum is scanned for the frequency contributing the most energy. The frequency is converted back to a period, and the result is displayed as dominant wave period.
