The PONSEL turbidity sensor uses nephelometric technology to determine the concentration of suspended particles in a water sample. With a range of 0-4000 NTU (0-4500 mg/L), and resolution of 0.01-1 NTU or mg/L, the sensor is ideal in dredge monitoring, wastewater treatment controls, effluent treatment and surface water monitoring. Robust and waterproof (IP68 rating), the PONSEL turbidity sensor requires minimal maintenance and has a low power consumption.

As a smart sensor, it can store its configuration settings and calibration history for plug-and-play operation. This turbidity sensor features built-in SDI-12 and Modbus RS-485 signal outputs for connect to external data loggers.

With a simple adapter, the PONSEL turbidity sensor can directly interface with Isco samplers and flow meters. When connected to an Isco sampler, the turbidity sensor can be set to trigger a sampling event based on reading levels. The sensor can also be commanded and calibrated through a PC with the USB adapter and CALSENS software. The sensor is easily calibrated with Formazin standard solution, and the calibration is stored within the sensor for swapping between devices without the need to recalibrate.

Are there any interfering substances?
The optical windows of the turbidity sensor can be affected by organic solvents, strong acidds and bases, hydrocarbons or any material that might coat the sensor. Air bubbles and solar radiation may also affect readings if they come in contact the the optical window.
How accurate is the sensor?
The Ponsel turbidity sensor is accurate within 1% full scale (FS) of the selected range.

Dredging found to reduce fish biodiversity

Researchers at Penn State University find that dredging projects may reduce fish diversity, according to a release . Dredging is usually undertaken to remove detrimental sediment from a waterway. The investigators looked at 15 sites along the Allegheny River in Pennsylvania, comparing sections that had been dredged to undredged ones. They found reduced fish populations and less variety in aquatic life in areas where dredging occurred. The researchers say the dredging process increases turbidity, which alters fish-foraging ability. Two autonomous underwater vehicles launch in Lake Ontario

Two autonomous underwater vehicles are drifting through Lake Ontario, monitoring a slew of environmental metrics, according to a release from New York Sea Grant. The high-tech equipment is recording data on fish productivity, food web changes and algae levels. Each AUV weighs 42 pounds, is six and a half feet long and has a slew of sensors, including side scan sonar and 10-beam Doppler. Mapping capability complements collected parameters like temperature, turbidity, pH and levels of oxygen and phosphorus, among others. The research is made possible through the Cooperative Science Monitoring Initiative between the US and Canada called for under the Clean Water Act of 1972.
