The Benthos 866-A Continental Shelf Acoustic Release is a low cost, compact, and rugged unit rated for deployment to 2000 meters (6600 feet). The lightweight release is only 65.5 cm (25 in.) long and weighs only 18 kg (40 lbs.) in air. It is capable of supporting and releasing a load of 2000 Kg (4400 lbs.). The unit is housed in highly corrosion-resistant duplex stainless steel, with an operating life underwater of one year of 250,000 transponds.
The release features an external on/off/test switch for quick reset and deployment. Opening the housing between short-term deployment or tests is not necessary. At-sea, turnarounds typically take less than 20 minutes including battery replacements.
The unit, when used with its capability of 10 km (6.2 miles). Secure FSK command codes, confirmation of release, and an Omni-directional transducer patter assure reliable recover. In addition, the 866-A Release has a wide variety of receive and transmit frequencies available.
