But for 45 million Americans who drink water that comes from private wells, drawn from groundwater and unregulated by a public utility, the question of what's in that water is an even bigger unknown—a potentially dangerous one. In 2016, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a report indicating that supplies of drinking water near hydraulic-fracturing or fracking sites are more likely to be affected by contamination events.
