Details

The RM Young 50202 Precipitation Gauge accurately measures rain or snow precipitation without moving parts. The precipitation gauge's unique design with centrally located capacitive sensor is not affected by unsteady conditions, making the instrument ideal for use on moving platforms such as buoys and ships.

Rain or snow collected in the catchment funnel is directed into the measuring chamber. The column level is sensed by a capacitive probe and converted to a linear voltage signal that can be read by external data collection devices such as the NexSens iSIC data logger. When the column level reaches a maximum of 250mm (50mm of precipitation), the chamber automatically empties and the process repeats. Total precipitation can be easily tracked and analyzed using NexSens data logging & telemetry systems.

The precipitation gauge offers durable thermoplastic construction with no moving parts for excellent corrosion-resistance and long term reliability. Insulated housings and thermostatically controlled heaters permit operation at temperatures below freezing.

UNC's industry-standard water quality profiling platforms get upgrade

The University of North Carolina Institute Of Marine Sciences has a history with profiling platforms. UNC engineers and scientists have been building the research floaters for 10 years in a lab run by in Rick Luettich , director of the institute. UNC scientists and engineers developed their own autonomous vertical profilers to take water quality readings throughout the water column.  They have three profilers  placed in the New and Neuse rivers. The profilers are designed to drop a payload of sensors to an allotted depth at set time intervals. Instruments attached take readings continuously on the way down and up. Data collected by the profilers has been used to study water related issues such as infectious disease and sediment suspension.

USGS weather station network monitors Arctic Alaska's climate

When the U.S. Geological Survey began building their climate and permafrost monitoring network in Arctic Alaska in 1998, there wasn't much precedent for how to build the infrastructure for the instruments in the region's unforgiving environment. That meant the scientists had to learn the particulars on the fly. For example: On the great expanse of flat, barren tundra, a weather station sticks out like a sore thumb to a curious grizzly bear. "The initial stations were pretty fragile," said Frank Urban, a geologist with the USGS Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center. "So the bear and those stations--the bear won every single time without any problem.

Ice Fishing With A SondeCAM Underwater Fishing Camera

Thinking of hitting the ice with a SondeCAM underwater fishing camera? Due to its rugged design, you won't have to worry about it handling the harsh elements. However there are a few simple tricks to get the most out of a FishSens SondeCAM while ice fishing. You won't have to do anything to modify the SondeCAM itself, but you are going to have to bring a few extra things. Most importantly we are going to need a power source. Unless you are hauling your gear with a truck, you'll want something more portable than the battery you used in the boat. Pick up an inexpensive and maintenance-free 12-volt, 9-amp battery. It is going to provide plenty of power, but will be much lighter and take up less space.
