Details

The Solinst LTC Levelogger Junior simultaneously measures and records water level, temperature, and conductivity. Like the Levelogger Junior, the Solinst LTC Levelogger Junior is easy to transport, program, deploy and retrieve data. It combines a data logger, 5-year battery, pressure transducer, and temperature/conductivity sensors within a small waterproof housing less than 1" in diameter.

The conductivity sensor is a 4-electrode platinum sensor with auto-ranging capabilities. The sensor is simple to clean and calibrate, even in the field. Using standard Levelogger Software and accessories, conductivity, temperature, and temperature-compensated water level measurements are easily configured, displayed, and analyzed. The Solinst LTC Levelogger Junior memory is non-volatile and stores up to 16,000 sets of readings at a user-defined interval between 5 seconds and 99 hours.

Questions & Answers

| Ask a Question
Do I need to calibrate this instrument?
Due to the included conductivity sensor, Solinst recommends that the LTC Levelogger Junior be calibrated at least twice per year.
Can the LTC Levelogger Junior determine specific conductance?
Yes, in addition to measuring conductivity and temperature, the LTC levelogger junior can calculate temperature corrected conductivity using the Data Compensation Wizard.
What sampling rate is the 5 year battery life based on?
The 5 year battery life is based on a sample rate of 1 reading every 5 minutes.

Wetland water level study skips modern sensor tangle for 1930s method

Environmental sensors can measure almost any physical parameter in nature, but sometimes they can overwhelm the science they are supposed to support. Jason Hill, an assistant professor of engineering at the University of Southern Indiana, wants to create a water level model that will help wetland restorers understand and predict water level fluctuations by studying water loss through the ground and evapotranspiration. The problem is his next project site has too many variables to measure. So, he’s taking an old fashioned route based on empiricism and water level measurement. Hill said that conventional techniques for estimating evapotranspiration require site specific micrometeorological data, like solar radiation, wind speed and vapor pressure.

Landslide monitoring, social research protect San Vicente in El Salvador

Soil around San Vicente volcano in El Salvador has always been rich, leading farmers to plant coffee, beans and sugar cane on its slopes. In times of heavy rain, the loose soil and volcanic rock on the steep slopes washes down, covering the villages nearby in heavy mud. Small downpours typically aren’t a big deal, but hurricanes and tropical storms that bring lots of rain are. When Hurricane Ida hit in November 2009, nearly 300 people died from volcanic debris flows in the communities in and around the town of San Vicente. An international aid effort followed.

CrowdHydrology sources water level data from public's text messages

Chris Lowry’s idea was simple: set up staff gauges on local streams and leave a sign requesting passersby read the water level and text the data to a phone number. Data from text messages would be recorded and then posted to a website for public use. It was the beginning of CrowdHydrology , a crowdsourcing project that recently gained U.S. Geological Survey support for expansion into several Midwest states. Though it won’t generate as much data as official USGS stream gauges, the project will generate data points that supplement those lost from official gauges shut down following federal budget cuts. Lowry, an assistant professor of geology at the University at Buffalo, set up eight pilot sites in New York in 2011 in an attempt to crowdsource water level data.
