Ready for the Field

The Trimble Ranger 3L computer is designed to withstand the elements and survive the stress of working outdoors. The Ranger 3 series is tested to rigorous military standards for temperature extremes, drops, vibration, humidity and altitude. The IP67 rating means the Ranger 3 handheld is completely sealed against blowing dust and it can survive immersion in up to a meter of water for 30 minutes.

Powerful integrated features

The Ranger 3 series has many built-in capabilities that make it easy to collect, save and transmit data in the field. The integrated GPS receiver, compass and accelerometer enable new possibilities for location-aware software to combine location, bearing and motion data. The 5megapixel autofocus camera uses the GPS data to capture geotagged images. The camera with flash is useful for inspection, maintenance and repair applications. Standard features of the Trimble Ranger 3 series include an ARM Cortex-A8 superscalar processor, a long-life lithiumion battery, integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless capabilities and 8 GB of Flash storage. The Secure Digital card slot enables the addition of SD/SDHC memory cards for even more storage. The large sunlight-visible VGA display shows images, maps and data in crisp detail.

The optional integrated 1D barcode laser scanner enables a variety of applications, such as tracking parts and assets used in field service applications, as well as warehousing and logistical applications. The optional integrated 3G GSM cellular WWAN enables connectivity to the Internet and corporate networks, enabling mobile applications to synchronize data with servers and databases in the office.

The Ranger 3 series includes the latest Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional operating system, so it runs all the applications you use most, including a wide range of third-party software for industryspecific applications. Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional features a new interactive user interface that supports taps, flicks, pans and scrolls, making the user experience more intuitive and fun.

Robust mobile application platform

Multiple integrated features, a highperformance CPU, and a rugged design make the Ranger 3 a very capable computing platform for mobile applications. The Ranger 3 Software Development Kit provides software developers with a hardware-specific API to use in conjunction with Microsoft software development tools. The Ranger 3 series has Windows Mobile certification and has undergone hundreds of hours of testing to ensure reliability and stability.

The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality's Water Quality Division

With an average rainfall of only 12.5 inches per year and a population that's growing faster than the country's , Arizona is a state that faces unique challenges, especially when it comes to clean, safe water. The Water Quality Division of the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) protects and enhances public health and the environment by monitoring and regulating drinking water. And although they make use of the latest scientific methods and new technology, given the current state of Arizona's water system, they also rely upon low-tech equipment and cooperation from members of the community to monitor water quality in the state. Team members in the Groundwater Protection Program work to sample, test and characterize groundwater quality in all 51 of Arizona’s basins.

Latest Satellite and Eddy Covariance Data Shows Vulnerability of Trees to Drought

William Anderegg, assistant professor of biology at the University of Utah, has spent years studying drought-stricken trees all over the world. As climate change is expected to cause increased drought severity in the future, the work of Anderegg and his colleagues becomes increasingly important. In a previous interview for the Environmental Monitor , Anderegg found that a tree’s hydraulic safety margin was the best indicator of whether a tree would survive drought. The hydraulic safety margin is an expression of how the tree reacts under drought conditions, where there is very little water being pulled up the tree’s transport system and air is being pulled up instead. “It’s like a heart attack for the tree,” he noted.

A Balancing Act In The Grand Canyon: The High Flow Experiments

You've probably heard of the Four Corners region of the United States; that's where the corners of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado meet at one point. These same four states are also part of the Colorado River Storage Project (CRSP), which began to change the face of the American West in 1956, enabling the population explosions in places like Phoenix and Los Angeles to continue thanks to usable water. Glen Canyon Dam is 220 meters high and 480 meters wide, and this massive structure has changed this section of the Colorado River all the way to Lake Mead dramatically. It has also increased low-flow magnitudes, decreased peak flow magnitudes and volumes and caused fluctuations in daily discharge levels that the area relies upon for generation of hydroelectric power.
