The Cyclops-7 submersible fluorometer sensors are designed for integration into remote data collection and telemetry platforms. The sensors offer a unique combination of performance and size, making them very attractive for freshwater, coastal, and oceanographic environments. Cyclops-7 sensors are configured and factory scaled for the specific analysis of turbidity, chlorophyll, phycocyanin, phycoerythrin, rhodamine dye, fluorescein dye, CDOM, crude oil, optical brighteners, PTSA dye, or tryptophan.

The Cyclops-7 sensor features a locking sleeve Impulse connector with cable options available from 2 feet to 50 meters. The rugged stainless steel construction is designed to withstand most environmental conditions. For stationary deployments in highly corrosive environments, titanium sensor housing is also available. Common applications include turbidity dredge monitoring, algal bloom notification, and dye tracer studies.

Does the sensor store data?
The Cyclops-7 submersible sensors do not store data. They must be connected to an external data collection platform for data storage. The Turner Designs DataBank is available in both handheld and stationary configurations for logging data from any of the Cyclops-7 sensors.
Can I use these sensors in a lab?
Yes, the Turner Designs Cyclops-7 sensors can be used in a lab and can even be directly connected to a PC using the Cyclops Explorer.
What is the maximum cable length compatible with the Cyclops?
A cable of up to 300 meters in length can be connected to the Cyclops if the cable is shielded, connected to a device with an input impedance of 1 MegOhm or greater, and the voltage supplied is between 5 and 15 volts.
Will temperature affect my sampling?
Yes, temperature will affect the fluorescence of your samples. When taking measurements, temperature should be recorded with a separate sensor or manually in order to correct the sensor output.
I ordered multiple sensors; how do I tell which is which?
There is a small letter engraved on the connector of each sensor identifiying its parameter. For example, a "C" stands for Chlorophyll, "R" identifies a Rhodamine sensor and "F" is a Fluorescein sensor.
What is the minimum detection limit of the Crude Oil sensor?
The Turner Designs Cyclops-7 Crude Oil sensor can detect a minimum concentration of 0.2 ppb, with a dynamic range of 0-2700 ppb.
I'm looking for turbidity sensors that will connect to arduino data loggers. Will the Turner Designs Cyclops-7 turbidity sensor work for that application?
The Turner Designs Cyclops-7 submersible turbidity sensors has a 0-5 VDC output and requires a DC power supply of 3-15 VDC. As long as your Arduino data logger can accept this voltage input and an external power source is provided, then the sensor is compatible.
Does the turbidity sensor come with a temperature sensor or thermistor to calibrate NTU?
No, this sensor does not have a temperature sensor option. For temperature compensation, it is recommended to have a separate temperature sensor or thermistor recording the temperature of the water/sample.
What is the recommended operating depth for these sensors? Can I use them in a small stream or a sample bottle?
When taking readings, the sensor optics (located on the bottom of the sensor) must be fully submersed and at least 3” away from any obstructions (stream bottom, container wall etc.). There should also be at least 2 inches of water between the sensor and an obstruction or side wall.
Does the entire sensor need to be submersed, or just the tip? I'm a little concerned as some of my study areas have very low flow at times (<6 inches depth).
As long as the optics in the tip are fully submersed, the rest of the sensor does not need to be. However, if you are working in a shallow stream, you may get better measurements by holding the sensor horizontally underwater. In addition, a shade cap for the sensor is recommended for protection from direct and reflected rays of sunlight. This cap will protect the sensor optics from sunlight and ensure that any surfaces or obstructions will not interfere with the data. Shade caps are available under the Accessories tab.

Two autonomous underwater vehicles launch in Lake Ontario

Two autonomous underwater vehicles are drifting through Lake Ontario, monitoring a slew of environmental metrics, according to a release from New York Sea Grant. The high-tech equipment is recording data on fish productivity, food web changes and algae levels. Each AUV weighs 42 pounds, is six and a half feet long and has a slew of sensors, including side scan sonar and 10-beam Doppler. Mapping capability complements collected parameters like temperature, turbidity, pH and levels of oxygen and phosphorus, among others. The research is made possible through the Cooperative Science Monitoring Initiative between the US and Canada called for under the Clean Water Act of 1972.

Wind probably isn’t the first thing that people think of when considering causes of poor water quality, but sediment disturbances caused by the combination of shallow waters and high winds are threatening the health of Iowa’s Storm Lake. Although Storm Lake looks picturesque from a distance, the resuspension of sediment is affecting water clarity and exposing harmful nutrients in the water.
