Out of the Box & Ready to Go
The KestrelMet 6000 is a fully configured all-in-one solution–no guesswork required to choose the right sensor combination. Cellular connectivity and solar power with backup battery make this a completely standalone solution right out of the box.

Quick & Easy Set Up
You can expect a fast, frustration-free set up experience with the KestrelMet 6000 weather station up and running in under 20 minutes from start to finish. There’s no wiring of any sort required. All key weather sensors mount on one sturdy platform with a simple single mast attachment.

Low-Cost Data Plan
Typically, weather stations can come with a hefty premium for cellular data coverage, but the KestrelMet comes with first year FREE. No hidden activation fees. After the first year, KestrelMet offers a low-cost data plan option – pay only $50 for the whole year! The SIM card comes activated for seamless connection to kestrelmet.net.

Reliable Cellular Coverage
Get ultra-reliable weather information, even in remote locations. No need to worry about Wi-Fi reception. For professionals or anyone who doesn’t want to deal with interruptions from spotty internet connections, cellular offers the best solution for data reliability.

24-hour Aspirated Fan for Improved Accuracy
Solar radiation can cause measurement errors and reduce sensor accuracy. Shielding over the air temperature and relative humidity sensors and a 24-hour aspirated fan keep air moving constantly over the sensors. This results in a significant improvement in measurement accuracy versus passive-shielded weather stations with no aspiration fan.

Multiple Mounting Options
Choose between the Mono Mount Kit or the Tripod Mount Kit to best fit your needs. Both options offer quick install and a secure mounting system. The Mono Mount and can be used on a pitched or flat roof as well as a vertical surface such as a gable end. While the Tripod can be used on flat terrain, a flat roof, or on the ridge of a pitched roof.

Wind speed is measured continuously and stored in station memory as a series of 2 second averages. The reported wind speed is the average over the 15 minute logging interval. The highest measured speed during the logging interval is reported as the gust value.
Wind Direction 1° - 360° Wind direction is measured continuously and stored in station memory as a series of 2 second averages. The reported wind direction is the average scalar direction over the 15 minute logging interval. The gust direction is the average scalar direction for the 2 second record corresponding to the gust value.

Questions & Answers
What mobile carrier should I select? Does it have to match my existing plan?
You should choose the mobile carrier that has the best coverage for your area. It does not matter which carrier you personally use as you can see the data without having an AT&T or Verizon account.
What is the optimal installation location for the KestrelMet 6000?
Sun coverage is important to keep the unit powered. Choosing a place with adequate sunlight will help keep it powered in low sun / cloudy conditions. The other consideration is in a unsheltered area to help catch the current wind conditions, bearing in mind that you may have to clean the rain gauge occasionally. Lastly, if you mount it next to something that radiates heat (i.e., a black fence), this could slightly raise the temperature readings. If you are using a tripod mount, you may want to secure it to the ground or weigh it down in higher wind areas.

CastAway Doubts about Conductivity, Depth and Temperature Monitoring

The Sontek CastAway-CTD is a castable device that measures conductivity, temperature and depth. The instrument has been used in the field for over a decade by oceanographers, limnologists, divers, fishers and educators. There have been few changes since the first iteration in 2010, showing that the instrument is durable and accurate without requiring new models.   The CastAway is the first conductivity, temperature and depth (CTD) instrument of its kind. While other CTDs are large and cumbersome to deploy, with cages and isolated sensors, the CastAway is a small, lightweight and easy-to-use instrument. Typical CTDs utilize pumps to ensure water flows over the sensors during deployment.

Dimethyl Sulfide: A Key to Marine Sulfur Biogeochemistry

Christopher Spiese is assistant dean at the Getty College of Arts & Sciences, acting director of the school of social sciences and human interaction, and associate professor of chemistry at Ohio Northern University. He is also a marine sulfur enthusiast. Marine sulfur biogeochemistry, which involves the cycling of sulfur through aquatic biological and geological systems, is essential for the functioning of marine life. However, the exact chemistry involved is not entirely known, piquing the interest of researchers like Spiese. “I went into marine sulfur biogeochemistry during my graduate work. I completed a doctoral environmental chemistry program at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) under David Kieber.
