A do-it-yourself hack lets citizen scientists measure snowfall in their own backyards, according to the DIY website Instructables. The design takes a common kitchen scale and turns it into a snow monitor.

The hack lays out steps needed to retrofit a scale for measuring the weight of fallen snow. It breaks down the tricks to get the scale open and change wires as needed. There are also alternative instructions for those wanting to beef up the accuracy with a new microcontroller.

Some soldering may be required, but a personal snow monitor isn’t that far off for those with some technical acumen. The common configuration shouldn’t require any sourced parts.
