After years of planning, the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) was approved April 22, 2012, creating an international organization to highlight the importance of biodiversity research to lawmakers. The IPBES will be based in Bonn, Germany and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) will facilitate the meetings and organization of IPBES.
The new organization will be responsible for identifying scientific information necessary to bring into the political arena, performing routine assessments of biodiversity and ecosystems and prioritizing biodiversity information to be a liaison between the scientific and lawmaking communities.
