Thirteen of the 14 warmest years on record have occurred in the 2000s, according to a report from the United Nations’ World Meteorological Organization. The report is released annually and covers extreme weather around the world.
The most recent documented year, 2013, was the sixth warmest. The report also indicates the first decade of the 21st century was the warmest ever charted.
Looking at long-term averages, data show recent temperatures are higher by 0.5 degrees Celsius. And countries in the southern hemisphere, including Argentina and New Zealand, were particularly warmer in 2013.
