{"id":15848,"date":"2013-11-29T06:00:52","date_gmt":"2013-11-29T10:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/?p=15848"},"modified":"2021-11-10T16:43:26","modified_gmt":"2021-11-10T20:43:26","slug":"ocean-acidification-prompts-low-cost-long-term-ph-sensor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/ocean-acidification-prompts-low-cost-long-term-ph-sensor.htm","title":{"rendered":"Ocean acidification prompts low-cost, long-term pH sensor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">A new generation of small, low-cost sensors for long-term monitoring of the pH of seawater is within reach, British researchers report.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Accurately measuring ocean pH is important because scientists say human activity is causing the seas to become more acidic, with potentially alarming consequences for marine food chains.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Oceans absorb about a quarter of global carbon emissions, triggering chemical reactions that increase the acidity of seawater. Acidification reduces the availability of calcium carbonate minerals that some phytoplankton, corals, mussels and other species use to build their skeletons and shells.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWhen it\u2019s more acidic, they have difficulty to produce their shells,\u201d said Victoire R\u00e9rolle, a postdoctoral researcher at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, England. \u201cSo this is threatening a whole system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Ocean acidification is a gradual process that requires long-term monitoring, so researchers need instruments that can be deployed in remote areas and take repeated measurements over long periods.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Currently most devices for in-situ pH measurements use electrodes, which are incapable of the precision needed to study ocean acidification, R\u00e9rolle said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The more promising technology is spectrophotometry, which involves passing light through a substance to determine its chemical properties.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThere\u2019s no off-the-shelf instrument currently available for that,\u201d R\u00e9rolle said. \u201cThe components are quite expensive and it\u2019s quite big. So the challenge is that we need to miniaturize it and make it cheap enough for wide production.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">R\u00e9rolle and colleagues say they\u2019ve made significant progress in addressing that challenge.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15854\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15854\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15854\" alt=\"The microfluidic chip used in the pH micro sensor. (Credit: National Oceanography Centre)<\/p><\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The micro sensor they developed took accurate measurements during more than a month aboard a research vessel, they report in the journal Analytica Chimica Acta.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The tool uses an indicator dye that changes color as pH changes\u2014not unlike the litmus strips familiar to high school chemistry students\u2014contained in a microfluidic chip. It also uses a spectrophotometer to measure light from an LED as it passes through the dyed water, and pumps and valves to control the water sample.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWhat\u2019s really new in our system is we\u2019re using a microfluidic chip to miniaturize the system,\u201d R\u00e9rolle said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">That\u2019s important because it means the tool requires few inputs, so it could be deployed for a long time without maintenance, R\u00e9rolle said. For example, it used less than 30 milliliters of indicator dye during the entire test deployment.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The instrument could have uses beyond monitoring global change, R\u00e9rolle said. For instance, it could be deployed to detect leaks from oil drilling operations or from projects where atmospheric carbon is pumped undersea for storage.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In its current form the micro sensor is only geared for use onboard a vessel, but R\u00e9rolle said she aims to have a prototype for an in situ model developed by the summer.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The latest findings on ocean acidification underscore the urgent need for such a tool. Ocean acidity has risen 26 percent since the Industrial Revolution and will likely more than double by century\u2019s end, costing global fisheries $130 billion, according to a United Nations report.<\/p>\n<p>Already acidification has been blamed for a collapse of the Pacific Northwest oyster fishery that began in 2005.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #888888;\">Top image: Rising ocean
