Coursing more than 150 miles from Troy to the New York Harbor, the Hudson River estuary is a diverse ecosystem rich with natural resources. But despite running through the nation\u2019s most populous city, Tim Sugrue, CEO and president of Clarkson University\u2019s Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries, says that too few people understand the significance of the estuary. He \u2014 along with several other organizations \u2014 plan to change that.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany people don\u2019t recognize that the Hudson River is an estuary \u2014 or what that means and why it\u2019s important,\u201d Sugrue said. \u201cHaving, if you will, a bully pulpit from which to make the public aware of what the Hudson River is, why it\u2019s important to them, and what they can do about it is important to its stewardship.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Beacon Institute found their pulpit six months ago, when the Hudson River Park expressed interest in a research facility at Pier 26 in Manhattan. It\u2019s there that the institute and its partners (including the Hudson River Park Trust, and New York state\u2019s departments of State and Environmental Conservation) are creating the Hudson River Park Pier 26 Estuarium, a research and education center dedicated to estuary study and public discovery. Though the central location makes the deal \u201ceven sweeter,\u201d Sugrue said the institute would have participated in a state-funded estuary center wherever it was.<\/p>\n

The Estuarium will make real-time monitoring, data collection and research open and accessible to the public. Catering to children and adults with indoor and outdoor programming, as well as interactive exhibits and a field research station, the center will help spread awareness about the estuary and its importance to the watershed and all of its inhabitants. However, the Estuarium won\u2019t feature wet labs where scientists \u201care taking old-school samplings from the river and putting them in petri dishes,\u201d Sugrue said. Instead, it will focus on data-driven research.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re deeply invested in the establishment of a network of real time monitors, acoustic and optical, by which we systematically, continuously and comprehensively collect data relative to the river,\u201d Sugrue said.<\/p>\n

Those data will include measurements of chlorophyll, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, dissolved petrochemicals and more. The Beacon Institute is working with IBM on a delivery mechanism that will allow access to the data from around the world, especially with partners from other Great Lakes institutions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese data tell a story that is not currently told, and ultimately, you know, the sky\u2019s the limit with the use of these data,\u201d Sugrue said.<\/p>\n

While funding is an obstacle to many research projects \u2014 even on much smaller scales than this \u2014 the Estuarium is designed to support itself. A departure from reliance on donors and federal funding, Sugrue said, is \u201cthe wave of the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe lion\u2019s share of the operating income is going to come from for-credit academic programs that use the Estuarium,\u201d Sugrue said. \u201cIt seems obvious, it seems natural, but it\u2019s different from how these operations do typically function.\u201d<\/p>\n

While there\u2019s currently no opening date set for the Estuarium, Sugrue said getting the center up and running is \u201cjob one.\u201d When the center does open, he believes it will improve public understanding of a poorly understood ecosystem.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have such a reliance \u2014 nationally, and in the state of New York \u2014 on the availability of clean water for living, to drive our economic engine,\u201d Sugrue said. \u201cPublic awareness is the most important dimension of continuing stewardship over this river and other rivers.\u201d<\/p>\n
