Scientists with the Open University say that Nepal\u2019s location makes it more susceptible to earthquakes, according to the BBC. Geoscientists say that moving thrust faults caused the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred on April 25. <\/p>\n
They point to the Himalayas, which are a result of the Indian tectonic plate sliding under the Eurasian tectonic plate. As the mountain range continues to grow taller as a result of that tectonic activity, scientists say tremors will occur. <\/p>\n
More than 5,000 people have been reported dead, and thousands of survivors are seeking food, shelter, and water since the quake. At least 14 aftershocks were recorded, ranging from 4 to 6.6 in magnitude. Nepal\u2019s latest concern is landslides, which could cause additional damage and slow rescue efforts. <\/p>\n
