{"id":22070,"date":"2015-05-20T12:58:22","date_gmt":"2015-05-20T16:58:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/?p=22070"},"modified":"2021-11-10T16:41:01","modified_gmt":"2021-11-10T20:41:01","slug":"excess-nitrogen-causing-more-chesapeake-bay-algal-blooms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/excess-nitrogen-causing-more-chesapeake-bay-algal-blooms.htm","title":{"rendered":"Excess Nitrogen Causing More Chesapeake Bay Algal Blooms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the past twenty years, researchers have found significant increases in algal blooms in Chesapeake Bay, according to a release from the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science.<\/p>\n<p>A recent study linked the increases in algal blooms to increased nitrogen runoff into the Bay, linked to increasing human populations in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C. region and an increased use of the watershed for agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the general increase in algal bloom events, researchers also noticed increases of primary microorganisms driving algal blooms in the Chesapeake Bay, including cyanobacteria.
