Planning is underway at Lake Superior State University to expand the university\u2019s aquatic research lab. Both houses of Michigan\u2019s legislature have already approved $8.8 million to construct the addition. All that\u2019s left now is for Lake Superior State to raise $3 million in a capital campaign to cover the rest, according to the Sault Star.<\/p>\n
Officials at the university say that the expanded lab makes sense for the region, which is heavily dependent on Lake Superior for much of its economy. The lab\u2019s location near an international border also makes the new addition worthwhile for those living on the Canadian side.<\/p>\n
The aquatic research lab at the university first launched in 1977. Construction on its addition is planned to begin in 2018 and will likely include an improved fish hatchery, more classroom space, testing labs, offices and a discovery area for elementary and high school students. <\/p>\n
