{"id":29096,"date":"2018-04-19T11:10:10","date_gmt":"2018-04-19T15:10:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/?p=29096"},"modified":"2022-07-25T15:52:49","modified_gmt":"2022-07-25T19:52:49","slug":"green-adsorbent-reduces-pollution-effectively-activated-carbon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/green-adsorbent-reduces-pollution-effectively-activated-carbon.htm","title":{"rendered":"\u201cGreen\u201d Adsorbent Reduces Pollution More Effectively than Activated Carbon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the EU challenged scientists like Dr. Elza Bontempi of the University of Brescia to come up with a greener option for cutting down on particulate matter (PM), they couldn&#8217;t have known she&#8217;d take them at word. Using sodium alginate extracted from algae and seaweed and the byproduct of a common industrial process, Dr. Bontempi has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fchem.2018.00060\/full\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">created a coating<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can remove PM with 94 percent efficiency, even at high concentrations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Bontempi corresponded with EM about her research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Air pollution caused by fine particles (2.5 \u03bcg or less in diameter) is especially harmful, because the small particle size that characterizes fine PM can so easily penetrate human bronchi and lungs. \u201cAccording to the European Environment Agency, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2016-11-europe-air-pollution-early-deaths.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">467,000 premature deaths in Europe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were attributed to PM2.5 in 2013,\u201d adds Dr. Bontempi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2015, the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/byinnovation.eu\/european-commission-launches-euro-3m-prize-to-improve-air-quality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European Commission decided to stimulate research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the field of new materials designed to reduce the concentration of PM in urban areas. Their aim was to highlight innovative, affordable, and sustainable solutions, based on design-driven materials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI started the work I presented in my paper in 2015 in response to the European Commission request,\u201d details Bontempi. \u201cIt&#8217;s a new material for PM reduction, and it also shows interesting characteristics in terms of dye adsorption, making it applicable for wastewater treatment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PM infiltrates air and wastewater in the form of droplets and particles emitted from vehicles, power plants, fires, and factories every year. Both organic dyes and PM are toxic to humans\u2014and to entire ecosystems. Chem.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost materials used today to remove PM are made by mining and processing minerals drawn from the planet\u2019s mineral reserves,\u201d Bontempi describes. \u201cThis requires energy, and that also means carbon emissions; more than 20% of all human carbon emissions is caused by materials production.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this context the reuse of byproduct materials is fundamental. Bontempi and her team combined two materials that are naturally abundant: sodium alginate and silica fume, a byproduct of silicon or ferrosilicon metal alloy processing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI have a lot of experience in fly ash,\u201d Bontempi remarks, referring to the way she chose the materials to work with. \u201cI worked for several years on the stabilization of heavy metals contained in fly ash derived from the municipal solid waste incineration process. In fact, the European Commission has already financed two of my research group&#8217;s projects on this subject.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The result is her \u201cgreen\u201d adsorbent that can be painted onto surfaces to absorb PM and then rinsed to regenerate. It is easy to synthesize, and simple to apply as a coating in several different ways, shown in<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1mWeoTfbTgc&amp;feature=youtu.be\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the team&#8217;s YouTube video<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (Credit: Screen shot, Bontempi)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is a composite material, so it can adsorb contaminants due to to the nature of its components; silica ash has good adsorption properties,\u201d adds Bontempi. \u201cIn addition, the material is porous, with pores ranging from microns to nanometers. These pores can trap PM in air.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In water, the material is used in a slightly different way, consolidated with food-grade sodium bicarbonate which helps the alginate gel. The composite was able to remove high concentrations of the model pollutant, a methylene blue dye, from wastewater samples with 94 percent efficiency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHonestly, I hope that this material will be applied to the external surface of buildings, to trap PM,\u201d Bontempi states. \u201cThere are no other materials that can compare to this, for PM reduction in cities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bontempi should know; she wrote<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.springer.com\/gp\/book\/9783319608303\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the book on sustainable materials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, literally.
