{"id":29222,"date":"2018-05-03T11:29:58","date_gmt":"2018-05-03T15:29:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/?p=29222"},"modified":"2025-01-13T13:26:50","modified_gmt":"2025-01-13T17:26:50","slug":"crowdsourcing-science-curiosity-along-middle-cedar-river","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/crowdsourcing-science-curiosity-along-middle-cedar-river.htm","title":{"rendered":"Crowdsourcing Science and Curiosity Along the Middle Cedar River"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to natural resources, we occasionally overlook those that we need the most. For University of Iowa (UI) Research Engineer<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineering.uiowa.edu\/faculty-staff\/christopher-jones\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christopher Jones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one of the most critical and overlooked of these resources is scientific curiosity. Now, with the help of a grant of almost $90,000 from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Jones and his team are making good use of local reserves of scientific curiosity, thanks to the volunteer efforts of citizen scientists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The citizen scientists are helping Jones and other researchers from UI\u2019s<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iihr.uiowa.edu\/about\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IIHR Hydroscience and Engineering<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> faculty test nitrate levels in the water of the Middle Cedar River and its tributaries as they run between Cedar Falls and Cedar Rapids. The volunteers collect samples of water and dip test strips into the samples. If the strips detect nitrate, they change color. The volunteers then take photographs of the strips and submit those images through a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deltares.nl\/en\/news\/the-nitrate-app-testing-what-you-cant-see\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smartphone app<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that analyzes the images and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/iwqis.iowawis.org\/app\/?iwqis=\/sensors-map\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">displays the results online immediately<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. From there, the results can be accessed by the UI faculty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jones corresponded with EM about the project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur interactions with scientists at<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deltares.nl\/en\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deltares in the Netherlands<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> inspired the project,\u201d explains Jones. \u201cWe learned of the smartphone app from them 2 or 3 years ago at a scientific meeting in San Francisco, and they demonstrated it to us here in Iowa. They have come to Iowa frequently because the agricultural systems and water quality challenges in Iowa are similar to those in the Netherlands.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team monitors nitrate because nitrogen is essential for plant growth, and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agron.iastate.edu\/glsi\/teaching\/soil-and-land-use\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">around 70 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the land area of Iowa is devoted to livestock and crop production. However,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/water.usgs.gov\/edu\/nitrogen.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">too much nitrate in water<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014a common problem in places that make frequent use of fertilizer such as agricultural states like Iowa\u2014can harm animals and humans, and negatively impact water quality on a large scale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers have linked excessive levels of nitrate in drinking water to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ehp.niehs.nih.gov\/1206249\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">birth defects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/progressreport.cancer.gov\/prevention\/nitrate\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, hair loss,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/research\/pouring-it\/health-effects-nitrate-exposure\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">infant methemoglobinemia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (also called blue baby syndrome), rashes, and other health issues. High nitrate levels can cause harmful<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/close-study-lake-toxins-new-techniques-reveals-good-news.htm\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">algal blooms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that create toxins; in fact,<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thegazette.com\/2013\/08\/04\/farm-fertilizer-runoff-wreaking-havoc\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iowa is one of the primary sources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of high levels of nitrate and phosphorus in the Mississippi River that have created a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/earths-oceans-suffocate-climate-change-nutrient-loading-create-dead-zones.htm\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low oxygen \u201cdead zone\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Gulf of Mexico.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Iowa is dependent upon its agricultural industry, so it is important to find sustainable ways to support farming in the area while protecting drinking water. For example, Des Moines, the largest city in the state, runs the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/discoveries\/disc_summ.jsp?cntn_id=244861&amp;org\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biggest nitrate removal facility in the world<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as part of the local drinking water treatment plant. The state of Iowa also monitors water in various places, and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/iowa-farmers-using-cover-crop-incentive-protect-water-quality.htm\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">collaborates with farmers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help reduce nitrate pollution. The university also does its share of monitoring.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_29224\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29224\" class=\"size-large wp-image-29224\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/crowdsourcing_mikael-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"crowdsourcing\" width=\"620\" height=\"414\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-29224\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Volunteer with phone test card. (Credit: Christopher Jones)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe university manages a network or water quality sensors deployed at about 60 sites around Iowa,\u201d remarks Jones. \u201cThese are measuring nitrate, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, temperature, and specific conductance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The volunteers receive training to take samples, and thus far their readings are very similar to those generated by the lab.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe give them an hour long training that includes the background of the project and demonstration of the app,\u201d states Jones. \u201cIt&#8217;s very easy, anyone can use it. About 10% of the volunteer samples are analyzed in the laboratory at the University water treatment plant.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volunteers also receive basic materials for their work. Beyond that, they just need a smartphone and motivation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey need nitrate test strips that change color when exposed to nitrate in the water,\u201d details Jones. \u201cThe smartphone quantifies nitrate based on the color change. We also provide sample bottles so we can assess the app results versus lab results. We provide everything to the volunteers at no charge.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How often they visit testing sites is up to them; obviously their reports show when and how often they&#8217;ve collected the data\u2014and the project is providing monitoring at a volume that would not otherwise be getting done.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_29226\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29226\" class=\"size-large wp-image-29226\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/crowdsourcing_card-1024x763.jpg\" alt=\"crowdsourcing\" width=\"620\" height=\"462\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-29226\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Close-up view of test card. (Credit: Christopher Jones)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCrowdsourcing is an idea that has caught on not only in science but in other fields as well,\u201d remarks Jones. \u201cThe quality of each individual data point or piece of information may be less than that generated by trained scientists. But you can generate so much data so cheaply in this manner. We are interested in whether the magnitude of data can buffer or smooth out some of the questions about data quality.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s a valid question; so far, the program seems to be working.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cReally we are less than half way through the project but there is a lot interest and enthusiasm,\u201d Jones states. \u201cPeople want to make a contribution to solving these big water quality problems. There is so much paralysis in our legislative processes, that is frustrating to people. This project enables people to feel like they are making a contribution. Also I think most people are natural scientists. You don&#8217;t need a lot experience, or a degree or formal training. You just need to be curious.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One benefit that may be unexpected to some is how much research scientists and engineers have to gain from this kind of process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cScientists and engineers can learn a lot from these volunteers,\u201d adds Jones. \u201cSometimes as we go about the daily machinations our work, we lose sight of the fact that the most important trait a scientific researcher can have is curiosity. We can really get stuck in a rut, doing the same or similar things year after year because we know it will work. We sometimes don&#8217;t take enough risks with our research. For many of the volunteers, curiosity is all they have, aside from some altruistic instincts.
