Protecting 16,000 acres of land, much of which is still in its natural state, the area includes diverse habitats. The \u201cfive rivers\u201d in its name refer to the Miami River, Stillwater River, Mad River, Twin Creek and Wolf Creek which run through the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grace Dietsch, Five Rivers MetroParks Biologist, hails from the village of Rio Grande, Ohio, though she has also worked in Oregon and Washington State. Grace has worked for Five Rivers MetroParks for four years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEach MetroPark may have primarily one habitat or mixtures of several,\u201d she explains. \u201cEach MetroPark has a unique combination of a few or all habitat types. They are all different. Every location has amazing natural features and offers protection for a variety of plants and animals.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Five Rivers has upland forests, bottomland forests, wetlands and prairie habitats. There are also edge thicket areas with thick cover that is hard to walk in\u2014which makes it a great cover for animals and birds. Raspberries and blackberries also grow in edge thicket, and it is really important for many species as a source of food.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Getting a sense of the land<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a large cover mapping project underway for all 16,000 acres, covering all MetroParks habitats, including wetlands, rivers and lakes. There was a huge cover mapping effort in 1999-2000, and the general consensus was that it was now time to do it again. (Credit: Lori Balster)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe cover mapping uses a mobile mapping unit that collects GIS data,\u201d says Dietsch. GIS and mobile mapping efforts are performed using an outside company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vegetation types are also surveyed at Five Rivers. \u201cThrough contractors, we can do species-specific aerial monitoring. For example, we can tell where the highest concentration of honeysuckles are or where new populations are popping up in an entire tract of land. This helps us prioritize where to focus our management efforts,\u201d she adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Habitat planning unit maps are also constructed. Uploaded results will be loaded into a Biobase Excel sheet. Depth mapping will be performed on all bodies of water, with a particular focus on the areas where fishing takes place. Major fluctuations of water will also be recorded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne of the questions we want to answer is: Do our water bodies need more structure to support sustainable fish populations?\u201d says Dietsch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Five Rivers does not have an official water monitoring program, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ohiolnci.org\/author\/doughorvath\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doug Horvath<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Five Rivers MetroParks Naturalist, has assisted with stream quality assessments in the past. In a 2015 report, for example, he examined mile 1.6 at the DeWeese Park Access, tracking mayfly nymphs and crayfish. There is also a Miami Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (MVUUF) service group of citizen scientist volunteers called the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montgomerycountymd.gov\/DEP\/water\/clean-water-montgomery\/stream-health\/stream-wildlife-SH.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stream Team<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that does some environmental monitoring in Dayton\u2019s Wolf Creek at Wesleyan MetroPark. The Stream Team was featured in a previous <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/meet-the-stream-team-mvuuf-citizen-scientists-keep-a-watchful-eye-on-daytons-wolf-creek.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental Monitor article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other groups also conduct water monitoring research on Five Rivers waterways. (Credit: Lori Balster)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Five Rivers does<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nepis.epa.gov\/Exe\/ZyPDF.cgi\/P1003GXN.PDF?Dockey=P1003GXN.PDF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> RAPID assessment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of its grasslands and its wetlands.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Land management<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Five Rivers treats their ponds for excessive algal growth. They do grassland management and edge thicket management. They also have planted 4,000 native trees as part of reforestation efforts. In the March \u2013 April timeframe they do prairie burnings, as that is a natural process and essential for the health of the grasses. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other studies<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carbon sequestration studies have also been performed within the bounds of Five Rivers MetroParks. \u201cThe University of Kansas conducts carbon sequestration monitoring at the Great Miami Mitigation Bank in Trotwood. They have sensors that take regular carbon readings. This work examines a variety of factors influencing wetland development, soil function and greenhouse gas uptake,\u201d Dietsch mentions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When it comes to environmental monitoring of vegetation, Five Rivers MetroParks seems to leave no mossy stone unturned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI also enjoy the approach of Five Rivers MetroParks,\u201d Dietsch enthuses. \u201cThere\u2019s a very big push to get the community involved. There\u2019s a real spirit of serving the public and providing experiences to the public. Lots of education and science goes into Five Rivers MetroParks.
