{"id":31564,"date":"2019-05-08T11:17:17","date_gmt":"2019-05-08T15:17:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/?p=31564"},"modified":"2025-01-27T11:20:10","modified_gmt":"2025-01-27T15:20:10","slug":"research-and-education-at-the-hawaii-institute-of-marine-biology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/research-and-education-at-the-hawaii-institute-of-marine-biology.htm","title":{"rendered":"Research and Education at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An independent research facility within the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">School of Ocean Earth Science and Technology (SOEST)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University of Hawai\u02bbi at M\u0101noa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.himb.hawaii.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hawai\u02bbi Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has multidisciplinary research and education in tropical marine biology at the heart of its mission. HIMB is also a world leader in applying new technologies to conservation research into Hawai\u02bbi&#8217;s stunning biodiversity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.judylemus.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Judith D. Lemus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, HIMB&#8217;s interim director and the co-director of the University of Hawai\u02bbi at Manoa&#8217;s graduate program in marine biology, spoke to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EM<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about HIMB.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHIMB is a partner in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.act-us.info\/\">Alliance for Coastal Technologies<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which supports development and evaluation of technologies for coastal environments,\u201d explains Dr. Lemus. \u201cHIMB helps to identify, evaluate, and improve emerging technologies like sensors and automated arrays that can be used for coastal water quality monitoring.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is also a long-term statewide <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/research\/org\/labs\/coral-reef-assessment-and-monitoring-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coral reef monitoring and assessment program (CRAMP)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that has been ongoing since 1998.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe network consists of over 30 long-term coral reef monitoring sites and associated data base, and includes state-wide habitat spatial mapping and rapid quantitative assessments,\u201d Dr. Lemus describes. \u201cOne important area of interest is on developing a better understanding of the ecology of Hawaiian coral reefs under climate change and as they relate to other geographic areas using these tools.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New technologies at HIMB<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several emerging areas of research at HIMB are using drones and autonomous vehicles to explore the world beneath the water\u2019s surface.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31567\" style=\"width: 437px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31567\" class=\"size-full wp-image-31567\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/HIMB_drone_technology.jpg\" alt=\"research\" width=\"427\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.fondriest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/HIMB_drone_technology.jpg 427w, https:\/\/news.fondriest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/HIMB_drone_technology-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 427px) 100vw, 427px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-31567\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Using drone technology in the field. (Credit: \u00a92019 Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDrones and autonomous vehicles are being used by research teams studying coral reefs, marine mammals, and sharks,\u201d states Dr. Lemus. \u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.himb.hawaii.edu\/research\/#tab-5c9fc3b3d8cdd-8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Madin Lab<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is using UAVs and photogrammetry to provide measurement estimates of corals in 3D. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmrphawaii.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Marine Mammal Research Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is using drones to survey the body condition and behaviors of humpback whales in Hawaii, and UAV photogrammetry to develop a method to rapidly assess delphinid population age structure that can provide an assessment of population growth and survival rates.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Shark Lab is also using tags and telemetry to test the use of animal-borne tags for collecting oceanographic data such as oxygen, temperature, and ambient light. (Credit: \u00a92019 Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.judylemus.com\/makerlab\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIMB MakerLab<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is another hotspot for new technologies that educators can put to work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe MakerLab is a makespace-style science laboratory and design workshop that was created for in-service and pre-service teachers, and other undergraduates, to explore science, engineering, and design practices so they are better prepared to teach scientific investigation and authentic inquiry in the classroom,\u201d comments Dr. Lemus. \u201cWe are currently funded by NSF to guide pre-service teachers in scientific questioning, design, tinkering, and investigation. (Credit: \u00a92019 Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research and educational facilities at HIMB<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIMB offers top-notch facilities for outside researchers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cVisiting researchers are sponsored by one of our faculty and generally work in the research laboratory of that faculty member,\u201d remarks Dr. Lemus. \u201cThey may also utilize some of our other shared research facilities such as seawater tanks or the genomics core facility.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIMB also hosts a number of different educational programs for students, as this is a key\u00a0<\/span>area for the Institute.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEducation is a very important part of our mission and HIMB offers educational programs for students from grade 4 to post-graduate,\u201d Dr. Lemus adds. \u201cOur <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.himbcep.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community Education Program (CEP)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provides both tours and educational programs for visiting classes, community groups, and families. The High School Science Inquiry program offers field trip experiences and hands-on laboratories for high school students and classes. (Credit: \u00a92019 Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPublic education is generally run through the CEP, but many individual labs might offer opportunities for members of the public to get involved in science research,\u201d advises Dr. Lemus. \u201cOne current project, led by the Coral Reef Ecology Lab, is the development of coral health color cards that recreational swimmers, snorkelers, and divers can use to assess and report on the health of the corals that they encounter.
