As temperatures warm, larger species hunt new prey in deeper waters, changing the ways nutrients and energy flow in lakes and triggering a \u201crewiring\u201d of food webs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uoguelph.ca\/ib\/bartley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Timothy Bartley<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41559-018-0772-3\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study lead author<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a post-doctoral researcher in the U of G&#8217;s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uoguelph.ca\/ib\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Department of Integrative Biology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, spoke to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EM<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41559-018-0772-3\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the work<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI got started on this when I first began graduate school and joined an ongoing project, which was a collaboration with the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/page\/ministry-natural-resources-and-forestry\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d explains Dr. Bartley. \u201cFrom there I developed my own questions about how fish in Ontario Lakes are responding to climate change.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Bartley was part of the fieldwork which took place between 2008 and 2010.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe were out in various parts of Ontario doing some of the data collection in collaboration with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources,\u201d details Dr. Bartley. \u201cEventually that data set was finished and became part of my doctoral work. This paper came about at the very end of my doctoral work, so although it was quite a long process, it was an enjoyable and exciting one.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the main takeaways of the work and the paper is the fact that climate change is asymmetrical in space\u2014some parts of the planet warm more and more quickly than others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis asymmetry happens in terms of hemispheres, where another hemisphere is warming faster than this other hemisphere, but this also takes place even just within Canada, where some lakes warm faster than others,\u201d Dr. Bartley describes. \u201cAnd within a single lake, you have nearshore waters that warm faster than deeper, offshore waters.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31970\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31970\" class=\"size-full wp-image-31970\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/climate_change_asymmetry_TIM.jpg\" alt=\"climate change asymmetry\" width=\"150\" height=\"108\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-31970\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Dr. Timothy Bartley. (Credit: University of Guelph, via source)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Bartley emphasizes the complexity of climate change because the team believes it drives another important take-home message.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSpecies are responding to this new patchwork of conditions and climate change, and they&#8217;re responding by moving,\u201d remarks Dr. Bartley. \u201cOne of the primary fascinating takeaways here is that this is a fairly general pattern in many ecosystems, including in lakes, polar ecosystems, and in temperate grasslands. We see evidence that species are moving in response to climate change asymmetry, and changing food web structures all over the place as they move.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This raises many different future research questions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne of the take-home messages, especially for other scientists, is that climate change is really complex and it&#8217;s mobilizing species at many levels,\u201d states Dr. Bartley. \u201cWithin an ecosystem you have species moving, and across ecosystems you have species moving.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although it&#8217;s easy to see this complexity as daunting, Dr. Bartley and the team see it as promising.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen species respond to climate change they don&#8217;t do it randomly, they do it based on what&#8217;s happening around them,\u201d comments Dr. Bartley. \u201cIn the case of fish in Ontario Lakes, we looked at how cold water adapted fish species responded to this asymmetrical warming. (Credit: University of Guelph, via source, https:\/\/news.uoguelph.ca\/2019\/03\/climate-change-impacting-fish-behaviour-feeding-in-ontario-lakes-u-of-g-study-reveals\/.)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That movement, which was consistent with their biology, meant that the movement itself was offering scientists new information about something else.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen you think about it, the ways species respond actually give you a lot of information about what&#8217;s happening around them, and we think you can use that information,\u201d adds Dr. Bartley. \u201cThe ways that species respond to climate change is informative for us to better understand more about the consequences of climate change.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while there are systems where people have started to study these responses, Dr. Bartley points out the value that a larger monitoring program designed to understand the consequences of climate change and identify how species are responding could do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat&#8217;s actually one of the ways that we think diversity is really important; different species do respond in different ways,\u201d states Dr. Bartley. \u201cSo when you have many different species responding in many different ways, we think that&#8217;s an important part of how biodiversity contributes to maintaining stability and function in ecosystems.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not to say that there isn&#8217;t tremendous diversity from place to place in how various species respond to the rigors of climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt&#8217;s true that you have different species responding differently in their local context, but also it&#8217;s fascinating that many of these consumers, especially large predators that are known to forage in different ecosystems, are actually exhibiting a sort of general response and shifting from primarily foraging in one habitat towards primarily foraging in the other,\u201d explains Dr. Bartley. \u201cSo in that diversity of responses, there&#8217;s also an important, consistent pattern.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coming next in this line of research for the team will be research designed to help the team better understand the consequences of the changes they have documented.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe have reason to believe that these species&#8217;
