{"id":32050,"date":"2019-09-17T10:19:14","date_gmt":"2019-09-17T14:19:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/?p=32050"},"modified":"2025-04-14T16:06:25","modified_gmt":"2025-04-14T20:06:25","slug":"new-monitoring-site-for-ocean-acidification-in-american-samoa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/new-monitoring-site-for-ocean-acidification-in-american-samoa.htm","title":{"rendered":"New Monitoring Site for Ocean Acidification in American Samoa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pacioos.hawaii.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Pacific Islands Ocean Observing System (PacIOOS)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\"> University of\u00a0<\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">Hawai\u02bbi at M\u0101no<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">a<\/a>, in collaboration with other partners, recently deployed a new ocean acidification (OA) monitoring site in<a href=\"https:\/\/americansamoa.noaa.gov\/\"> Fagatele Bay National Marine Sanctuary<\/a>, American Samoa.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coral.noaa.gov\/people\/derek-manzello.html\"> Derek Manzello<\/a>, a coral ecologist with NOAA\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aoml.noaa.gov\/\"> Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML)<\/a> in Florida, is the lead PI of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coral.noaa.gov\/research\/accrete.html\"> ACCRETE: the Acidification, Climate and Coral Reef Ecosystems Team<\/a> at AOML. Dr. Manzello connected with EM about the deployment.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cACCRETE encompasses multiple projects that all aim to better understand the response of coral reef ecosystems to climate change and\/or ocean acidification,\u201d explains Dr. Manzello. \u201cWe work to provide information to assist coral reef management and restoration, and this includes better understanding threats like OA.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much of these efforts focus on the in situ climate change and OA monitoring work that takes place as part of the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coris.noaa.gov\/monitoring\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> National Coral Reef Monitoring Program (NCRMP)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, co-funded by NOAA&#8217;s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coralreef.noaa.gov\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oceanacidification.noaa.gov\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ocean Acidification Program (OAP)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNCRMP has a tiered monitoring approach whereby we are taking a lot of measurements across a large spatial area at a low temporal frequency, but are taking many, high-resolution measurements at a high temporal frequency from select key sites,\u201d details Dr. Manzello. \u201cThe NCRMP plan calls for three class III or &#8216;sentinel&#8217; OA monitoring sites in the Atlantic and Pacific.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two operational sites in the Atlantic in La Parguera, Puerto Rico and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/floridakeys.noaa.gov\/zones\/spas\/cheecarocks.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Cheeca Rocks in the Florida Keys<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Prior to the deployment of the buoy in American Samoa, there was only one sentinel site in the Pacific: in Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI&#8217;ve managed the Cheeca Rocks buoy since 2012, while other partners manage the other buoys,\u201d Dr. Manzello describes. \u201cI led the installation of the buoy in Samoa because of my experience with the buoy in Florida, but the project will now be led by<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacioos.hawaii.edu\/contact\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Chip Young at PacIOOS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is based out of Hawaii.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The OA monitoring of NCRMP has two, paired components: physical monitoring and ecological response monitoring.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32054\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32054\" class=\"size-large wp-image-32054\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/OA_american_samoa_coral-600x400.jpg\" alt=\"ocean acidification\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.fondriest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/OA_american_samoa_coral-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/news.fondriest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/OA_american_samoa_coral-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.fondriest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/OA_american_samoa_coral-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.fondriest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/OA_american_samoa_coral.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-32054\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Corals in Fagatele Bay. (Credit: Derek Manzello, NOAA)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFirst, there is the physical monitoring of seawater carbonate chemistry, which is in part achieved with the MAPCO2 buoy, that has the goal of determining the magnitude and rate of ocean acidification on US coral reefs,\u201d states Dr. Manzello. \u201cWe have a robust understanding of the rate\/magnitude of OA from open ocean time-series data (BATS, HOTS), but the coastal environment and especially coral reefs have seawater carbonate chemistry dynamics that are highly variable both diurnally and seasonally. Thus, we still do not have a solid understanding of the rate and magnitude of OA in nearshore environments like coral reefs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team pairs this physical monitoring with ecological response monitoring: \u201cmonitoring specifically designed to document the abundances of the important calcifying and bioeroding taxa, as well as their respective rates of calcification and bioerosion. This is done via landscape photomosaic monitoring, census-based calcium carbonate budget monitoring, bioerosion monitoring, and calcification monitoring by taking coral cores every 5 to 10 years and assessing recent rates of coral growth,\u201d comments Dr. Manzello.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deployment for data<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fagatele Bay itself is a place more than 160 species of coral call home, along with dolphins, many species of fish, giant clams, and the critically endangered hawksbill sea turtle. The team selected the specific sentinel site for the buoy based on a range of factors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFirst, it\u2019s important that there are historical and ongoing long-term monitoring of benthic cover,\u201d states Dr. Manzello. \u201cIt&#8217;s important to have a baseline by which to gauge future change, as well as to understand how things have changed in the past and responded to other stressors like coral bleaching.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benthic monitoring has been conducted in Fagatele Bay, part of the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americansamoa.noaa.gov\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, since the 1970s. This longer-term monitoring highlights a second key consideration Dr. Manzello points out: experts expect the effects of OA to be subtle over time, and manifest as declines in coral reef calcification, with simultaneous increases in coral reef bioerosion and dissolution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTo be able to document these changes over time, we need to pick sites that have limited impacts from secondary disturbances that might confound the ability to detect an OA signal,\u201d remarks Dr. Manzello. \u201cFor example, you wouldn&#8217;t want to put an OA monitoring site next to a sewage outfall; that is going to have significant negative impacts on your reef, and you will likely never be able to document an impact from declining oceanic pH. Fagatele Bay has extra protection from other possible stressors and direct human impacts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, the MAPCO2 buoy itself will require regular sampling, refurbishment, and maintenance\u2014and available local resources to ensure that happens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are several well-equipped partner agencies in American Samoa that made this project possible, including the National Marine Sanctuary, as well as the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/npsa\/index.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> National Park of American Samoa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crag.as\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Coral Reef Advisory Group of American Samoa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dmwr.as.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Department of Marine Wildlife and Resources of American Samoa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d Dr. Manzello says. \u201cAfter PacIOOS takes over the management of the project, they will continue to work with us here at AOML, as well as NOAA&#8217;s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmel.noaa.gov\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Seattle, and NOAA&#8217;s CRCP and OAP.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_32059\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32059\" class=\"size-large wp-image-32059\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/OA_american_somoa_fagatele-600x450.jpg\" alt=\"ocean acidification\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.fondriest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/OA_american_somoa_fagatele-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/news.fondriest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/OA_american_somoa_fagatele-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.fondriest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/OA_american_somoa_fagatele-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.fondriest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/OA_american_somoa_fagatele.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-32059\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\">American Samoa, Fagatele Bay National Marine Sanctuary. [Public domain])<\/span><\/p><\/div><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Initial deployment plans for the buoy were delayed two months due to the government shutdown and to engine trouble with the shipping vessel en route from Honolulu. Due to this, Dr. Manzello reports that the deployment was a logistical challenge thanks to suboptimal weather and rough seas. However, with the help of local commercial divers and the efforts of partners Chip Young and PacIOOS, the deployment was successful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Moored Autonomous pCO2 (MAPCO2) system is the gold standard for long-term, accurate, and reliable measurement of seawater CO2 in surface waters,\u201d Dr. Manzello describes. \u201cThis buoy measures carbon dioxide in air and water, temperature, salinity, oxygen, turbidity, pH, and air pressure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Partners in American Samoa led by National Marine Sanctuaries of American Samoa are also conducting bi-monthly bottle sampling, and the team is using the data from that sampling to calibrate and validate the data from the buoy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlso, we are able to measure total alkalinity and dissolved inorganic carbon, two variables that are not measured on the buoy but are part of the carbonate system,\u201d adds Dr. Manzello.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, these data are reported to the public in real-time. This way, reef managers, scientists, and anyone else can follow CO2 trends and patterns through time, adding their insights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe seawater CO2 system of coral reefs can be highly variable from day-to-day and across seasons, so it&#8217;s necessary to take long-term, high-quality measurements with high accuracy and high precision at a high temporal frequency so that we are able to determine if coral reef environments are experiencing OA at the same rate and magnitude as what has been shown in the open ocean, where there is far less variability,\u201d remarks Dr. Manzello. \u201cThe MAPCO2 buoy takes measurements every three hours and internally calibrates its reading, thus providing accurate data at a sufficient frequency. However, to truly understand the impact of OA on coral reefs, the physical monitoring that is provided by the MAPCO2 and ancillary environmental data must be paired with biological monitoring to understand the impact of changing chemistry on coral reef ecosystems.
