{"id":32425,"date":"2020-07-14T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-14T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/?p=32425"},"modified":"2020-07-17T11:15:45","modified_gmt":"2020-07-17T15:15:45","slug":"biochar-adds-filtering-power-to-biofilters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/biochar-adds-filtering-power-to-biofilters.htm","title":{"rendered":"Biochar Adds Filtering Power to Biofilters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contaminated stormwater threatens a lot of water in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly 50,000 miles of rivers, 760,000 acres of wetlands and one million acres of estuaries are threatened by contaminated stormwater, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those numbers are cited in a review of research <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/en\/content\/articlelanding\/2020\/EW\/D0EW00027B#!divAbstract\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recently published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental Science: Water Resource &amp; Technology<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that looks at one tool for tackling that threat: biochar-augmented biofilters.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Biofilters and biochar team up on stormwater<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biochar, plant matter partially burned in a low oxygen environment, is \u201ca black, carbonaceous material\u201d with two key strengths: It sticks around for a long time and it retains certain chemicals on its surface, said Chris Higgins, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mines.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colorado School of Mines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and one of the authors of the study.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its long-term stability makes it a potential tool for carbon storage, but its ability to filter contaminants out of water makes it a useful addition to biofilters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biofilters are vegetated areas, like rain gardens, where stormwater can collect and filter through the soil and leave behind certain contaminants. They have been installed by many cities as one tool for managing stormwater amounts and quality. A 2014 US Department of Agriculture fact sheet touts rain gardens as \u201clow-tech, inexpensive, sustainable and aesthetically pleasing\u201d tools that \u201cfilter pollutants from runoff, recharge groundwater, conserve water\u201d and protect natural water bodies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When biochar is added to biofilters, their ability to filter out certain contaminants increases. <span class='bctt-click-to-tweet'><span class='bctt-ctt-text'><a href='https:\/\/x.com\/intent\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fondriest.com%2Fnews%2F%3Fp%3D32425&#038;text=Biochar-augmented%20biofilters%20were%20better%20than%20conventional%20ones%20at%20removing%20trace%20organic%20contaminants%2C%20like%20pesticides%20and%20certain%20plasticizers%2C%20and%20also%20microbes.&#038;via=FondriestEnv&#038;related=FondriestEnv' target='_blank'rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Biochar-augmented biofilters were better than conventional ones at removing trace organic contaminants, like pesticides and certain plasticizers, and also microbes. <\/a><\/span><a href='https:\/\/x.com\/intent\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fondriest.com%2Fnews%2F%3Fp%3D32425&#038;text=Biochar-augmented%20biofilters%20were%20better%20than%20conventional%20ones%20at%20removing%20trace%20organic%20contaminants%2C%20like%20pesticides%20and%20certain%20plasticizers%2C%20and%20also%20microbes.&#038;via=FondriestEnv&#038;related=FondriestEnv' target='_blank' class='bctt-ctt-btn'rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Share on X<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, for other substances like phosphorus, nitrogen and suspended solids, biochar didn\u2019t add significant filtering ability to conventional biofilters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, using biochar reduces the overall number of biofilters needed to meet stormwater treatment goals for certain contaminants, the study suggests.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">One tool among many<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biofilters won\u2019t be the single fix needed for all of a watershed\u2019s stormwater contamination issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to stormwater, some types of regulations are more difficult to meet, Higgins said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While biofilters might filter out enough contaminants to help stormwater meet mass-based standards, standards based on concentrations might be harder to meet. Even if a biofilter filters out 99.9% of a contaminant from stormwater with high concentrations, the treated water could still have too much contamination to meet a concentration-based standard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The difficulty of meeting stormwater standards based on concentrations means biochar-augmented biofilters should be one tool among many stormwater management tools, Higgins said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">All biochar is not created equal<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The review found differences in biochar\u2014how it was made and what it was made from\u2014that had implications for its filtration ability, especially when those products are made from wasted materials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe field of biochar from waste products is kind of the wild, wild west,\u201d Higgins said. \u201cThere are a lot of people making a lot of different materials that technically qualify as biochar, but they\u2019re not all the same, in terms of their performance.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biochar is usually made from plant matter, like wood or corn stalks, but can also be sourced from manure or biosolids from waste treatment plants.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32424\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32424\" class=\"size-large wp-image-32424\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Biochar_1-600x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.fondriest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Biochar_1-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/news.fondriest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Biochar_1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.fondriest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Biochar_1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.fondriest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Biochar_1-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/news.fondriest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Biochar_1-940x627.jpg 940w, https:\/\/news.fondriest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Biochar_1.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-32424\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Biochar boosts certain filtering capacities of biofilters like rain gardens. (Photo credit: Oregon Department of Forestry, <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/2.0\/\">CC BY 2.0<\/a>)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This review found that wood-based biochar processed at high temperatures tend to be the most powerful filters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Higgins said there is interest in generating biochar from wasted wood, like trees killed by pine beetles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pine beetles can kill huge swaths of a forest and have caused millions of dollars in damage in recent years. Turning trees killed by beetles into biochar would wrest some economic and environmental value out of huge, beetle-driven destruction.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Will it work for cities?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additional rain gardens and other biofilters will benefit cities beyond stormwater management.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s a big interest in urban environments to enhance green space, particularly as we\u2019re all confined to our homes,\u201d Higgins said. \u201c[Biofilters] could impact more than water quality.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biochar could enhance biofilter aesthetics, too. (Photo credit: Alisha Goldstein, US EPA)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To maintain maximum efficacy, biochar filters will need to be recharged with additional biochar from time to time, Higgins said. He noted researchers don\u2019t know exactly how willing cities will be to install new biofilters with biochar if it represents additional maintenance costs compared to biofilters without.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, most of the studies in this review were laboratory or mesocosm studies. To truly understand the benefits of biochar-augmented biofilters, a long-term study in a city is needed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s nothing like a field test,\u201d Higgins said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, research shows these biochar-augmented biofilters could be an effective part of a city\u2019s water management system.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Research in context<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This research review is part of a larger, years-long project called ReNUWIt, or Reinventing the Nation\u2019s Urban Water Infrastructure, aimed at holistic management for urban water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That means understanding that the different types of water in a city\u2014drinking water, storm water, wastewater\u2014can become another type later. Reclaimed wastewater could become drinking water. Stormwater, if contaminants are filtered out, could be used to recharge aquifers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn other words, water is water is water,\u201d Higgins said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To that end, researchers, engineers and cities have come together to find innovative ways to manage and reimagine water and wastewater.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a new paradigm for planning urban water systems into which biochar-augmented biofilters fit
