{"id":32478,"date":"2020-08-12T12:09:59","date_gmt":"2020-08-12T16:09:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/?p=32478"},"modified":"2024-10-22T15:24:27","modified_gmt":"2024-10-22T19:24:27","slug":"chloride-contamination-threatens-thousands-of-northeast-midwest-lakes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/chloride-contamination-threatens-thousands-of-northeast-midwest-lakes.htm","title":{"rendered":"Chloride Contamination Threatens Thousands of Northeast &#038; Midwest Lakes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thousands of lakes in the northeastern United States are at risk of chloride contamination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a 17-state area from Minnesota to Missouri to Maine, elevated chloride levels in some of the region\u2019s nearly 50,000 lakes are driven largely by landscape features that are cleared of snow and ice by road salt in the winter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe biggest driver of increasing chloride concentrations in these lakes was road density and development. The more developed a watershed, the more likely you are to have roads and parking lots,\u201d said Hilary Dugan, an assistant professor in the Center for Limnology at University of Wisconsin\u2014Madison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dugan is the lead author on a study examining the issue <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/10.1021\/acs.est.9b07718\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recently published in Environmental Science and Technology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It uses existing records to model the extent of chloride contamination throughout the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Predicting chloride contamination<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/114\/17\/4453\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After their previous research showed increases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in chloride in lakes throughout the 17-state region, Dugan and much of the same team shifted their focus to the geographical extent of chloride contamination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cInstead of looking at chloride through time, we tried to look at chloride through space,\u201d Dugan said. The goal was to build a \u201cpredictive landscape model.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dugan and team built a model using data from the National Land Cover Dataset and water quality data from the U.S. water quality portal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That model identified predictors of elevated chloride levels and identified 1,972 lakes across the region with chloride levels at or above 50 mg L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a good sign of anthropogenic inputs of chloride, Dugan said. Salt runs off roads and into lakes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur use of road salts is such a huge component of anthropogenic salt inputs that it kind of dominates the signal,\u201d Dugan said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.usgs.gov\/periodicals\/mcs2020\/mcs2020-salt.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent data from the United States Geological Survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that over 20 million metric tons of salt were spread on American roads in 2019, commonly in the states in the study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three of the four strongest predictors for elevated chloride levels, proximity to an interstate highway and low-density and medium-density development in the watershed, suggest road salt usage as a significant source.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Low and medium density development areas include areas like suburbs where winter salt usage is likely to be high.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fourth, density of cropland, points to the use of certain synthetic fertilizers like potassium chloride. Environmental Science &amp; Technology, June 1, 2020.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>Sodium chloride levels a call to monitor<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study sets a chloride contamination risk threshold at 50 mg L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That number doesn\u2019t relate to any official federal or state standard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The United States EPA sets the criterion for continuous concentration of chloride in freshwater at 230 mg L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In Wisconsin, it\u2019s 395 mg L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. New Hampshire sets the maximum four-day average at 230 mg L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Canada\u2019s national standard for long term chloride levels, which governs lakes adjacent to the study region, is set at 120 mg L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chloride standards vary even within states and for surface water or drinking water.<\/span><\/p>\n<span class='bctt-click-to-tweet'><span class='bctt-ctt-text'><a href='https:\/\/x.com\/intent\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fondriest.com%2Fnews%2F%3Fp%3D32478&#038;text=%E2%80%9CIt%E2%80%99s%20nearly%20impossible%20to%20provide%20one%20single%20number%20that%20indicates%20whether%20you%E2%80%99re%20polluting%20a%20system%20that%E2%80%99s%20causing%20damage%20to%20that%20ecosystem%2C%E2%80%9D%20Dugan%20said.%20%E2%80%9CAt%20the%20same%20time%E2%80%94while%20I%20say%20it%E2%80%99s%20nearly%20impossible%20to%20do%E2%80%94we%20have%20to%20do%20it.%E2%80%A6&#038;via=FondriestEnv&#038;related=FondriestEnv' target='_blank'rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cIt\u2019s nearly impossible to provide one single number that indicates whether you\u2019re polluting a system that\u2019s causing damage to that ecosystem,\u201d Dugan said. \u201cAt the same time\u2014while I say it\u2019s nearly impossible to do\u2014we have to do it.\u2026 <\/a><\/span><a href='https:\/\/x.com\/intent\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fondriest.com%2Fnews%2F%3Fp%3D32478&#038;text=%E2%80%9CIt%E2%80%99s%20nearly%20impossible%20to%20provide%20one%20single%20number%20that%20indicates%20whether%20you%E2%80%99re%20polluting%20a%20system%20that%E2%80%99s%20causing%20damage%20to%20that%20ecosystem%2C%E2%80%9D%20Dugan%20said.%20%E2%80%9CAt%20the%20same%20time%E2%80%94while%20I%20say%20it%E2%80%99s%20nearly%20impossible%20to%20do%E2%80%94we%20have%20to%20do%20it.%E2%80%A6&#038;via=FondriestEnv&#038;related=FondriestEnv' target='_blank' class='bctt-ctt-btn'rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Share on X<\/a><\/span>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fifty milligrams per liter is a conservative standard compared to national and state standards in the region, but lakes that exceed it almost certainly are feeling the impact of humans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf your lake has a chloride concentration of more than 50mg L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you definitely have human impact on it. There\u2019s a very small likelihood it\u2019s a natural concentration. In most cases it\u2019s probably ten, twenty-fold higher than it should be,\u201d Dugan said. \u201cThis is an area you should monitor.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Filling holes with monitoring and research<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dugan says ongoing and future research could benefit from increased monitoring of chloride levels across this region. A better record going forward could help researchers understand the effects of elevated chloride levels on aquatic species, identify long term trends and create opportunities for collaborative mitigation efforts between researchers and those who use road salt: both public officials and private citizens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though the water quality concerns of increased chloride levels are gaining more attention, many states had little or no observation data, Dugan said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Six states in this region reported chloride levels for zero or one lake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These gaps could be filled with a relatively simple conductivity measurement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are pretty straightforward ways of getting this data,\u201d Dugan said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More data would flesh out sparsely measured areas and catch more spikes in chloride levels throughout a year, something average chloride levels don\u2019t accurately measure.
