Part two , Lake Tanganyika, available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/unprecedented-changes-are-a-new-challenge-for-lake-tanganyika.htm\">here.<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lakes that have supported human settlements for thousands of years are starting to feel humans\u2019 effects in rapidly developing and significant ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From climate change to nutrient loading to plastic pollution, ancient lakes are straining under some of the least welcome contributions of humanity. The changes could have consequences for the diversity of life within the lakes and the human populations that rely on it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, while ancient lakes have been around long enough to weather past climatic changes, the changes occurring now are so rapid, the end result is uncertain.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">A group of familiar threats<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stephanie Hampton, a professor in the Center for Environmental Research, Education and Outreach at Washington State University, has studied Lake Baikal, the world\u2019s oldest lake, for years. Her literature review in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limnology and Oceanography <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">documents the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aslopubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/lno.10938\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ecological changes affecting ancient lakes around the world<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those changes include climate change, changes to lake levels, invasive species, eutrophication, overfishing and toxic contamination. They include threats, like climate change, that stem from global populations and economies; and others that come directly from the local human populations that spring up around the long term, stable source of freshwater and food that many ancient lakes provide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cities and the farms that support them send industrial, agricultural and domestic pollutants to lakes. The study notes metals and chemicals from factories and nutrients from agricultural land. Residents of cities add pesticides, pharmaceuticals and personal care products. As of yet, pharmaceuticals and personal care products are poorly understood as pollutants, even as they continue to appear in ancient lakes around the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The challenges facing ancient lakes are not unique or unfamiliar environmental threats. They threaten other, younger lakes and oceans. But, when they come for ancient lakes, they degrade resources distinctly valuable to science and the populations that rely on them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Learning from \u2018natural laboratories\u2019 before it\u2019s too late<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ancient lakes have provided unique ecological conditions that have made them nurseries for new and incredibly diverse species.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lake Baikal has 340 species of amphipod, a kind of small crustacean, while most lakes have three or four, Hampton said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the world\u2019s only freshwater seal in Lake Baikal to the incredibly diverse group of cichlids in Africa\u2019s great lakes, ancient lakes are hotspots of biodiversity and home to a lot of species that can be found nowhere else, she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32533\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32533\" class=\"size-large wp-image-32533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Ancient_Lakes_3-600x800.jpg\" alt=\"Changing ancient lakes\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.fondriest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Ancient_Lakes_3-600x800.jpg 600w, https:\/\/news.fondriest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Ancient_Lakes_3-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/news.fondriest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Ancient_Lakes_3-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.fondriest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Ancient_Lakes_3.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-32533\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Endemic amphipods on endemic sponges in Lake Baikal. (Credit: Stephanie Hampton)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Losing this biodiversity and the opportunity to study it is a grave concern, Hampton said. \u201cOnce it\u2019s gone, it\u2019s gone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ancient lakes also are long-term record keepers of geological and biological activity in the area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBecause they lie at the lowest point in the landscape, like all lakes, they\u2019ve been collecting this history in their sediment for as long as they\u2019ve been around,\u201d Hampton said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The history in lakes\u2019 sediment contains all sorts of information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paleolimnologists read sediment cores and identify changes in chemical and biological indicators to understand the past. Sediment cores in a lab can lead to insights about ancient climate, plant life and geological events, Hampton said. Sometimes plankton that can diapause, or lie dormant for years, wake up after years trapped in the sediment after it\u2019s brought into favorable lab conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ancient lakes have provided millennia of favorable conditions for humans, too: fresh water and a readily available source of food.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs a human being, you can understand why,\u201d Hampton said. \u201cIt\u2019s a concentration of resources, fishing, fresh water and a really diverse landscape that can support pretty big settlements of human beings.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the oldest human settlements are associated with ancient lakes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Fast changes are an unprecedented challenge<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To varying degrees, these unique contributions of ancient lakes are threatened by the changes they are experiencing. (Credit: Stephanie Hampton)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lake Victoria, one of the African Great Lakes, may have dried up completely at one point in the distant past, the study notes, but these huge swings took place over huge periods of time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As human impacts like development, deforestation and overfishing continue to accelerate in some places, the lakes are being forced to change faster than at any time in their considerable history.<\/span><\/p>\n<span class='bctt-click-to-tweet'><span class='bctt-ctt-text'><a href='https:\/\/x.com\/intent\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fondriest.com%2Fnews%2F%3Fp%3D32530&#038;text=%E2%80%9CThere%E2%80%99s%20been%20a%20lot%20of%20human%20disturbance%2C%20some%20of%20which%20has%20only%20been%20intense%20or%20becoming%20more%20intense%20in%20the%20last%20fifty%20years.%20For%20a%20lake%20that%E2%80%99s%20over%20130%2C000%20years%20old%2C%20fifty%20years%20is%20a%20blink%20of%20an%20eye%2C%E2%80%9D%20Hampton%20said.&#038;via=FondriestEnv&#038;related=FondriestEnv' target='_blank'rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cThere\u2019s been a lot of human disturbance, some of which has only been intense or becoming more intense in the last fifty years. For a lake that\u2019s over 130,000 years old, fifty years is a blink of an eye,\u201d Hampton said. <\/a><\/span><a href='https:\/\/x.com\/intent\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fondriest.com%2Fnews%2F%3Fp%3D32530&#038;text=%E2%80%9CThere%E2%80%99s%20been%20a%20lot%20of%20human%20disturbance%2C%20some%20of%20which%20has%20only%20been%20intense%20or%20becoming%20more%20intense%20in%20the%20last%20fifty%20years.%20For%20a%20lake%20that%E2%80%99s%20over%20130%2C000%20years%20old%2C%20fifty%20years%20is%20a%20blink%20of%20an%20eye%2C%E2%80%9D%20Hampton%20said.&#038;via=FondriestEnv&#038;related=FondriestEnv' target='_blank' class='bctt-ctt-btn'rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Share on X<\/a><\/span>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same is true of climate change, Hampton said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After thousands of years spent evolving in a relatively stable lake, some organisms are being forced to adapt faster than may be possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Lake Baikal\u2019s changing shoreline<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because ancient lakes have been around so long, they are often home to some truly remarkable results of evolution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Lake Baikal, amphipods likely have split into more species than in any other lake in the world: over 300.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amphipods in Lake Baikal thrive along the coast. (Credit: Stephanie Hampton)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shorelines are especially vulnerable because they feel the impact of development or changes in the watershed before other parts of the lake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen humans disturb a landscape, the first thing that reacts is typically the nearshore environment where nutrients or sediments or other pollutants will hit the lake first,\u201d Hampton said. \u201cThat\u2019s where a lot of the biodiversity of Lake Baikal is.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When that biodiversity includes highly diverse populations, like amphipods in Lake Baikal, science can lose something that exists in few other places, if anywhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are people studying [Lake Baikal\u2019s amphipods], but there\u2019s so much basic biology that needs to be done,\u201d Hampton said. \u201cIt would really be a shame to lose the opportunity to know more about them and their function in the lake.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lake Baikal\u2019s amphipods are unique to it. But, the characteristics and challenges it shares with ancient lakes around the world, whether large or small, arctic or tropical, old or really old, demands greater attention.
