{"id":39362,"date":"2025-03-24T08:00:13","date_gmt":"2025-03-24T12:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/?p=39362"},"modified":"2025-10-06T16:41:52","modified_gmt":"2025-10-06T20:41:52","slug":"sargassum-surge-how-seaweed-is-transforming-our-oceans-and-coastal-ecosystems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/sargassum-surge-how-seaweed-is-transforming-our-oceans-and-coastal-ecosystems.htm","title":{"rendered":"Sargassum Surge: How Seaweed is Transforming our Oceans and Coastal Ecosystems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Until recently, <em>Sargassum<\/em>\u2013a free-floating seaweed\u2013was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0924796323000672\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">distributed throughout the Sargasso Sea<\/a>, the north Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico. But in the space of a decade, this seaweed has, as <a href=\"https:\/\/heinonline.org\/HOL\/LandingPage?handle=hein.journals\/wmelpr47&amp;div=24&amp;id=&amp;page=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one scientist remarks<\/a>, \u201cGone from a nonfactor to the source of a terrible crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Driven by climate change, anomalous North Atlantic Oscillation in 2009-2010 and a glut of anthropogenic pollutants, sargassum has proliferated.<\/p>\n<p>Seasonally recurrent mats <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0924796323000672\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as deep as 7m<\/a> now bloom in the \u201cGreat Atlantic Sargassum Belt\u201d (GASB), which covers areas of the Atlantic from West Africa to the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. Every year, millions of tons wash up along the shores of <a href=\"https:\/\/sargassummonitoring.com\/en\/sargassum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more than 30 countries<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Yanna Fidai is an Earth Observation and Remote Sensing Scientist at Plymouth Marine Laboratory in the UK. (Credit: Yanna Fidai)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">The Emergent Problem<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Fidai explains that since 2011, \u201cSargassum has started blooming, proliferating and moving around the tropical Atlantic. There&#8217;s now lots in the Gulf of Mexico, in the Caribbean, down to the mouth of the Amazon River, across to the Gulf of Guinea, and just north of the mouth of the River Congo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While mats have historically provided a sanctuary for juvenile fish and migrating species in the open ocean, the super-sized accumulations of recent years\u2013as big as \u201chundreds of kilometers\u201d\u2013now pose a threat to biodiversity, human health and the livelihoods of coastal communities.<\/p>\n<p>In nearshore areas, sargassum can smother flora and fauna, including coral reefs and seagrass. Its accumulation and decomposition can increase <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexsens.com\/handbook\/3-4-turbidity.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">turbidity<\/a> and nutrient load, leading to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fishsens.com\/the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly-understanding-fisheries-and-eutrophication\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eutrophication<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When washed up on beaches, its rapid decomposition releases toxic gases like ammonia, methane and hydrogen sulfide, which can contaminate drinking water via leaching of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/establishing-a-water-sharing-program-in-bangladesh-solving-the-largest-mass-poisoning-in-history.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arsenic<\/a> and heavy metals, posing a threat to human health.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/15563650.2020.1789162?src=recsys\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">An observational study<\/a> in the Caribbean recorded almost 160 medical cases attributed to decomposing sargassum in a year, with patients suffering symptoms analogous to the toxidrome associated with acute exposure to hydrogen sulfide (H<sub>2<\/sub>S).<\/p>\n<p>The socio-economic effects of sargassum landings are substantial and multifaceted, affecting community and commercial activity at the coast.<\/p>\n<p>Discussing the subsistence lagoon fishing common off the West African coast, Fidai says, \u201cPeople are unable to get their boats out because of the sargassum stacked on the beach. When they\u2019re fishing, sargassum gets stuck in nets, engines, and propellers\u2013so they&#8217;re working longer hours for less. It&#8217;s having an impact on local food, fish exports, and incomes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And in a region famed for its crystal seas and white sand beaches, the mats are affecting the tourism industry, too, disrupting visitors\u2019 experiences and incurring a management cost for businesses. (Credit: Yanna Fidai)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Monitoring Sargassum with Remote Sensing<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Fidai used a \u201ccombination of satellite and in-situ\u201d measurements to investigate the movement of sargassum, which can be easily identified in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fishsens.com\/using-satellites-to-monitor-fisheries-and-improve-sustainability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">satellite imagery<\/a> because of its distinct brown pigment and movement patterns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSargassum creates a unique, teardrop-like shape, with the round bit at the windward edge,\u201d Fidai explains.\u00a0\u201cAnd then you&#8217;ve got windrows, which are more like stripes. You&#8217;ve got more isolated patches, but we can see the large ones very clearly in optical satellite imagery.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fidai\u2019s research used imagery from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), Sentinel-1, and Sentinel-2 satellites.<\/p>\n<p>Sentinel-1 uses synthetic aperture radar to detect sargassum, and its microwave bands mean it can \u201csee through clouds\u201d\u2013a useful feature when studying the tropical North Atlantic where there is \u201cconsistent cloud cover\u201d\u2013especially during hurricane season, Fidai adds.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_39365\" style=\"width: 950px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39365\" class=\"size-full wp-image-39365\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Fidai_2021-09-29-00_00_2021-09-29-23_59_Sentinel-2_L2A_NDVI-1-1_ForWeb.jpg\" alt=\"Satellite image of the Caribbean Sea (16.56595, -66.01014) taken by Sentinel-2, adjusted to show Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), a measurement of green vegetation. Developed during the COVID-19 pandemic using accessible materials and tested in her bathtub at home, 10 GPS spot trace trackers were deployed by local contacts on sargassum mats in the Caribbean Sea.<\/p>\n<p>The in-situ trackers provided valuable hourly data on mat movement. She notes, \u201cThis means we can confidently say that it\u2019s the same mat we\u2019re seeing in the different imagery. Sentinel-2 has a roughly five-day revisit time, so in that gap, we don\u2019t know if we\u2019re looking at the same mat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fidai continues, \u201cWe also got to see one mat moving from Barbados to land on the beach in St Lucia really quickly. Calculating the speed of movement is helpful in forecasting, to enable communities, islands, and local governments to prepare for any inundations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Local communities can also be mobilized to support in-situ monitoring. Fidai supported the University of Southampton&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/research\/projects\/sargsnap-building-youth-led-citizen-science-expertise-in-remote-ghanaian-coastal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sargSnap program<\/a>, a youth-led citizen science project in Ghana and Mexico, which aims to photograph landed sargassum at key locations. (Credit: Yanna Fidai)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Forecasting Sargassum<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In January 2025, sargassum concentrations in the eastern and western Atlantic surpassed the 75th percentile compared to recent years. <a href=\"https:\/\/optics.marine.usf.edu\/projects\/SaWS\/pdf\/Sargassum_outlook_2025_bulletin01_USF.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2025 is predicted to be another major Sargassum year<\/a>, but forecasting landings is complex.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSargassum is mostly moved by currents, but there is an estimated 2 to 5% impact of windage on sargassum movements,\u201d Fidai explains.<\/p>\n<p>In the North Atlantic, major circulatory systems, including the Caribbean Current, North Brazil Current System, and Gulf Stream, drive sargassum\u2019s pelagic movement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can model with some accuracy, but to validate the models, having in-situ data to track the mats is really useful, so we can get the ratio of wind and currents influencing the movement of sargassum,\u201d Fidai states.<\/p>\n<p>There are already a number of systems that provide predictions of sargassum loads, including a quarterly, Caribbean-wide bulletin, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) <a href=\"https:\/\/cwcgom.aoml.noaa.gov\/SIR\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Experimental Weekly Sargassum Inundation Report<\/a>, and the non-profit <a href=\"https:\/\/sargassummonitoring.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sargassum Monitoring<\/a> program.<\/p>\n<p>Fidai is clear that to ensure community preparedness, forecasting needs to be tailored for management purposes, stating, \u201cWhile it\u2019s helpful to have a good estimation of how much sargassum there\u2019s going to be over the next few months and where might be worst hit, it\u2019s not as useful as saying, this beach in two weeks is going to get 5,000 tons of sargassum, because the reaction is proportional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Forecasting is likely to become ever more important as coastlines continue to be impacted by record-breaking amounts of sargassum, and ongoing environmental monitoring will play a vital role in bridging the gap between scientists and affected communities.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_39373\" style=\"width: 950px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39373\" class=\"wp-image-39373 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Fidai_Tracker1L4_ForWeb.jpg\" alt=\"Tracking mats using satellite imagery. (Credit: Yanna Fidai)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Sargassum Opportunities<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Despite the negatives associated with sargassum, Fidai emphasizes, \u201cThere is room for economic opportunity as much as there is cost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Considerable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1568988323001919\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research has already documented<\/a> the possibilities of using the seaweed as a resource, including as a fertilizer and raw material for biofuels and pharmaceuticals.<\/p>\n<p>Fidai used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/monitoring-kentuckys-water-resources-with-drone-imaging-and-unmanned-surface-vehicles.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drone surveys<\/a> and field spectrometers to explore the valorization potential of sargassum landings in Barbados and Ghana and assess the possibility of developing a remote identification protocol.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf from the spectral signature we can determine what pigments and biochemical compounds are in the landed sargassum\u2013such as alginates, mannitol, sugars, and different proteins\u2013this could potentially lead to sargassum being harvested for use,\u201d Fidai says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is really important because many of the countries most affected by sargassum in terms of fishing and tourism are developing. (Credit: Yanna Fidai)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">An Uncertain Future for Sargassum<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Looking to the future, research on the fate of sargassum in the context of climate change is inconclusive. \u201cThe ocean is in a constant state of chaos,\u201d Fidai observes, \u201cso while we know key characteristics, they can also change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sargassum growth rate is temperature-dependent.
