Culture, Conservation and Climate Action in Ireland\u2019s Peatlands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Characterized by long-term accumulation under waterlogged conditions, peatlands exist on every continent and account for <a href=\"https:\/\/iucn.org\/resources\/issues-brief\/peatlands-and-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3-4% of the global land surface<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Small but mighty, these often overlooked wetland environments are estimated to hold as much as <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10533-023-01084-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one-third of the world&#8217;s organic carbon<\/a> in their soil\u2014twice the amount found in the entirety of the Earth&#8217;s forest biomass.<\/p>\n<p>While healthy peatlands can trap and store carbon, regulate water, and provide important habitats for rare species, human alteration has <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10533-023-01113-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disturbed peatland carbon and nitrogen cycles<\/a> on a global scale.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10533-023-01084-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">12% of the world\u2019s peatlands<\/a> have been drained and degraded through conversion for agriculture, forestry, infrastructure development, and other uses.<\/p>\n<p>Peatlands continue to be lost at alarming rates\u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10533-023-01084-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">three times faster than forests<\/a>\u2013and they are now hotspots of greenhouse gas emissions, estimated to account for around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucn-uk-peatlandprogramme.org\/sites\/default\/files\/header-images\/IUCN%20Resolution%2043%20summary%20report-FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">10% of global <\/a>annual carbon dioxide emissions.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_39403\" style=\"width: 950px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39403\" class=\"wp-image-39403 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IPCC-2_ForWeb.jpg\" alt=\"A drain running through a bog. (Credit: IPCC)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Mapping and Monitoring Peatlands<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Peatland restoration is considered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redalyc.org\/journal\/2815\/281577354008\/281577354008.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201clow hanging fruit\u201d<\/a> and a viable option for mitigating climate change. Consequently, policy and conservation efforts are gaining traction.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the European Union (EU) <a href=\"https:\/\/environment.ec.europa.eu\/news\/nature-restoration-law-enters-force-2024-08-15_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nature Restoration Law<\/a> came into force in 2024, and sets binding targets to restore degraded ecosystems, including peatlands. 88% of countries are signatories to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramsar.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ramsar Convention on Wetlands<\/a> and committed to the 2016 IUCN Resolution on peatlands.<\/p>\n<p>A vital first step in managing peatlands is understanding their extent and condition. <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10533-023-01084-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scientists have highlighted<\/a> that these unknowns hinder the development of national policies and restoration efforts.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Bogs in Ireland<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Founded in 1982, the Irish Peatland Conservation Council (IPCC) is based at the Bog of Allen, 35 miles west of Dublin.<\/p>\n<p>The IPCC aims to conserve a representative sample of Ireland\u2019s peatlands for future generations and is contributing to the monitoring and scientific understanding of these ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p>Peatlands cover\u2009approximately 21% of Ireland, but <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/rec.14216\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">up to 85%<\/a> have been degraded by human changes in land use. Commonly called \u201cbogs\u201d (from the Gaelic word for soft), they hold deep social and cultural significance.<\/p>\n<p>Tristram Whyte, Policy Officer at the IPCC, explains that \u201cthere are three main peatlands in Ireland\u2013raised bog, blanket bog, and fen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the last Ice Age, lakes formed in the midlands, where material accumulated without decomposing, creating fen habitats. \u201cThis layering of plant material eventually rose above the surrounding landscape to form raised bogs, which are about 10,000 years old,\u201d says Whyte.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce you have the fen habitat, if the sphagnum mosses\u2013brown mosses\u2013move in, they cap off the fen and it starts to rise above the surrounding landscape. These raised bogs are about 10,000 years old,\u201d he states.<\/p>\n<p>A dry period 4,000-5,000 years ago halted peatland growth, and Ireland had almost complete tree cover. \u201cThen it got very wet again, and the bogs started to grow. The trees fell over, the landscape became more open again,\u201d he continues.<\/p>\n<p>This cycle repeated twice. (Credit: IPCC)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Culture and Perception of Bogs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Peatlands in Ireland are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redalyc.org\/journal\/2815\/281577354008\/281577354008.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fundamental to cultural identity<\/a> and have provided shelter and fuel for centuries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re obviously about protecting bogs,\u201d says Whyte, \u201cbut we have to acknowledge their historical significance. When the Irish state was formed, it was the least forested country in Europe. Peat provided fuel for people when there wasn&#8217;t anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peat was so crucial that the sale of most houses included a \u201cbank of a local bog\u201d to be cut specifically for domestic use.<\/p>\n<p>Whyte recalls \u201cdrawing the turf to burn in the house\u201d during childhood summers spent in rural Ireland. Despite this, he notes, \u201cThere\u2019s actually quite a fear of some of the bogs [\u2026] They were seen as wastelands\u2013only valued for what was beneath the surface, not what was living on them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peat has also been commercialized. Camier \/ IPCC)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Restoring Peatlands<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Using a designated Protected Bog Purchase Fund, the IPCC purchases bogs, assigning them for protection, education and, where possible, restoration. Currently, it owns and manages six bogs across five counties.<\/p>\n<p>Peatlands grow very slowly, at rates of around 1mm a year\u2013part of the reason why continued extraction, even for domestic use, can be so damaging. Whyte observes, \u201cThe condition of peatlands in Ireland is that less than 0.1% of raised bog is actively growing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The IPCC manages a database of 1,150 peatland sites. From this, Whyte estimates that \u201conly about 25% of peatlands are in a conservation worthy condition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis means you might be able to rehabilitate it in terms of mitigating climate change impacts, but restoring it back to a raised bog probably isn&#8217;t possible,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p>Bog cores provide a snapshot through time of habitat and vegetation, with the latter enabling estimations of carbon storage. (Credit: IPCC)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">The Importance of Monitoring Peatlands<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The IPCC\u2019s bog monitoring efforts focus on measuring water and rot on or at the bog surface.<\/p>\n<p>A 20cm leeway in water level is acceptable between the wettest and driest periods of the year. \u201cIf the surface is dried, that means the peat is giving off carbon to the air, and it&#8217;s also giving off carbon into the water, which is then being drained and going into rivers,\u201d Whyte explains.<\/p>\n<p>Peat and silt drainage into rivers has been catastrophic for freshwater fish like trout and has contributed to the near-total collapse of the inland fishing industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIreland has actually been brought to court by the World Health Organization because of the amount of chemicals that we put into the drinking water to remove peat. You have to solidify the peat from the water to make it drinkable, but the chemicals are carcinogens,\u201d states Whyte.<\/p>\n<p>The IPCC uses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/solinst-model-615-drive-point-piezometer.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">piezometers<\/a> to measure bog water levels. Relatively rudimentary, these are fashioned with a long acrylic pipe with holes drilled along its length. A pair of tights pulled over the pipe acts as a mesh, so when the pipe is inserted into the bog, water can seep in, but peat can\u2019t. Ploppers\u2013a weight on a string\u2013are used to measure water height in the pipe.<\/p>\n<p>Multiple measurements taken along a transect enable mapping of water height, location, and identification of drains\u2013a vital step in informing management.<\/p>\n<p>For example, 5km of drains were identified at Lodge Bog, degrading an otherwise unextracted bog. (Credit: IPCC)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Bog Life\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cBogs are nutrient poor,\u201d says Whyte. \u201cThey\u2019re very hostile to wildlife\u2013you&#8217;ve got low nutrients, high water saturation, and you&#8217;re exposed to the elements.\u201d But these \u201calien\u201d habitats provide a home for rare species, like the carnivorous plants Sundew and Butterwort.<\/p>\n<p>Sphagnum moss can soak up more than eight times its weight in water and is a vital peat-building species.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSphagnum moss perpetuates the habitat,\u201d Whyte explains, \u201cit actually releases an acid and it creates a chemical reaction, a hydrogen ion exchange pump, and it&#8217;s able to get nutrients back from the peat, but it also means it&#8217;s perpetuating the acidity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The IPCC\u2019s long-term sphagnum trials assess rates of colonization on bare peat sites. 16 3x4m plots at Lodge Bog were prepared with straw at a variety of locations. Over the last decade, eight of these have become completely covered. Studies like this are particularly important in the context of climate change, as sphagnum is vulnerable to prolonged drought.<\/p>\n<p>Whyte explains that the IPCC also monitors some of the fauna that call the bogs home. For example, it contributed to monitoring of the Marsh Fritillary\u2013Ireland\u2019s only protected butterfly species\u2013and the Large Heath butterfly, which are endemic to raised bogs.<\/p>\n<p>The native Curlew, a wading bird, breeds on bogs between March and August, but its population has crashed by 98% since the 1980s. Fine-scale GIS monitoring of one breeding pair on IPCC-managed Lodge Bog has contributed to national reporting, helping inform conservation.<\/p>\n<p>Whyte emphasizes the importance of peatlands to biodiversity, \u201cAbout 60% of threatened bird species and 45% of threatened butterflies are peatland species,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>He continues, \u201cPeatlands were 23 or 24% of the habitat in Ireland, but only 25% of that is being conserved. (Credit: IPCC)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">The Future of Peat<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Since 1950, human-induced climate change has increased the frequency and duration of both drought and heavy rainfall events in most parts of the world. Characterized by near-permanent waterlogging, bogs are vulnerable to changes in hydrological regimes.<\/p>\n<p>Understanding the current state and influence of anthropogenic climate change on peatlands is vital to restoration efforts. Whyte advocates for continued mapping of bogs to enable protection and restoration, \u201cWe can\u2019t protect them if we don\u2019t know how much is there,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Conserving, protecting and restoring peatlands offers a cost-effective, nature-based solution that can reduce carbon emissions and deliver a range of benefits for water, biodiversity, and society.
