(Credit: CAESER)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Updating Management Strategies in Memphis<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Tennessee, specifically Memphis\u2019 reliance on the Mississippi embayment, provides unique research opportunities to scientists like Villalpando-Vizcaino. Various studies ranging from computer modeling to age dating and water quality have been conducted over the years, helping improve the understanding of the multi-layered aquifer system and water resources in general.<\/p>\n<p>This part of Villalpando-Vizcaino\u2019s work is of particular importance since Memphis is entirely reliant on groundwater for drinking water and utility use. (Credit: CAESER)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cBut over time, we found out that this protective clay layer is not as extensive or, as sealed, as we thought, and we\u2019re starting to see water quality changes impacting our groundwater,\u201d explains Villalpando-Vizcaino.<\/p>\n<p>Concerns about water quality and drinking water reliance are also surrounded by the burden of development and new businesses building factories in the region, such as Google, xAI and Ford Motors.<\/p>\n<p>As an example of a proactive approach, Villalpando-Vizcaino works with the state&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tn.gov\/megasite.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Megasite Authority<\/a> to help monitor an area in the region\u2019s recharge zone for the Memphis aquifer, helping understand water quality, chemistry, and groundwater levels.<\/p>\n<p>He is also involved in other projects in the region, from aquitard breaches in Memphis and recharge processes in West Tennessee, to municipal stormwater monitoring for model development and flood warning systems.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_40001\" style=\"width: 950px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40001\" class=\"size-full wp-image-40001\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Rodrigo_Drilling_ForWeb.jpg\" alt=\"Students in the background Melissa Medina (left), Victoria Matthews (center) and Joe Lane (right), and Rodrigo Villalpando-Vizcaino. (Credit: CAESER)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Monitoring Groundwater in Tennessee<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Across these projects, equipment and monitoring solutions may vary based on data needs and the environment, but overall, a similar suite of instrumentation is used.<\/p>\n<p>Villalpando-Vizcaino explains, \u201cEvery project is unique. So you have to tailor these solutions to the specifics of what\u2019s needed. You can\u2019t do a monitoring system in one place and then just replicate the exact same thing in a different place. You have to know the system, the needs, and adapt to it to provide the best solution and information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Currently, there are some seventy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/solinst-levelogger-5-water-level-loggers.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Solinst Levelogger<\/a> pressure transducers, a handful of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/solinst-barologger-5-barometric-pressure-logger.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Solinst Barologgers<\/a> and a few Leveloggers paired with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/solinst-levelsender-5-cellular-telemetry-system.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cellular Solinst transmitters<\/a> deployed across various projects in the region, recording continuous water levels and temperatures.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_40005\" style=\"width: 950px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40005\" class=\"size-full wp-image-40005\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Rodrigo_WaterSampling_ForWeb.jpg\" alt=\"PhD candidate Abrar Hossain and Rodrigo Villalpando-Vizcaino. (Credit: CAESER)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Additionally, discrete groundwater sampling using Solinst water level meters, such as Models <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/solinst-model-101-p7-probe-water-level-meters.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">101 P7<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/solinst-model-102-p10-probe-water-level-meters.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">102 P10<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/solinst-model-122-oil-water-interface-meters.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">122<\/a>, is conducted once a month.<\/p>\n<p>Since Villalpando-Vizcaino works predominantly with groundwater, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/geotech-geosub-2-stainless-steel-pump.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Geotech<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/proactive-stainless-steel-hurricane-xl-pump.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Proactive<\/a> pumps are used to retrieve samples from groundwater wells. ORP, pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, conductivity, and other relative parameters are measured using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/ysi-exo1-multi-parameter-water-quality-sonde.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YSI EXO1<\/a> multi-parameter sonde.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the more standard groundwater and surface water monitoring, other projects require gathering weather data, soil moisture, matric potential, or project-specific variables. (Credit: CAESER)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">The Importance of Informed Management of Groundwater Resources<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Entirely reliant on groundwater resources, continuous data collection and informed, future-oriented management plans are vital for the region\u2019s future reliance on the Mississippi embayment and across the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe studies we do at CAESER and the University of Memphis allow us to provide some of that information to stakeholders. And [with this data] people in charge can make sure our water resources stay plenty and clean for everybody,\u201d explains Villalpando-Vizcaino.<\/p>\n<p>He continues, \u201cWe, as scientists\u2014we\u2019re the data people. So, our goal is to gather that data, interpret it, and make it available so we can make informed decisions for the benefit of the community, and for future sustainable planning. It\u2019s just having a proactive mindset of \u2018You have the data, and now you can make informed decisions.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In order to do this effectively, communication must also include the average public, not just sponsors and government officials. CAESAR\u2019s Education and Outreach Division does just this, visiting schools, posting on social media, and \u201ctranslating\u201c the findings of these projects for public consumption.<\/p>\n<p>The public and private interface of this work is key, and a lack of understanding of conditions in the groundwater is part of the reason resources have been depleted in the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody needs water\u2014people, agriculture, industries\u2014and the fact that back in the day we thought everything was perfect, presents challenges, but also opportunities for us to now make proactive decisions,\u201d stresses Villalpando-Vizcaino.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, he believes that the region is in a good place to improve management as the people\u2014scientists, citizens, farmers, developers, politicians\u2014are a \u201ccircle where people are trying to do, not only what\u2019s in the regulations, but trying to do what\u2019s right.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_40011\" style=\"width: 950px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40011\" class=\"wp-image-40011\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Soil_Moisture_Water_Levels-scaled-e1753724594614.jpg\" alt=\"Rodrigo Villalpando-Vizcaino and master student Victoria Mathews.
