How L\u00e9XPLORE is Revolutionizing Lake Science"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lake Geneva (or Lac L\u00e9man) was formed some 15,000 years ago by retreating glaciers and is shared between France and Switzerland. Fringed by vineyard terraces and overlooked by both the Jura Mountains and the Alps, the lake is popular with visitors who come to enjoy the sights and recreation.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lakesfrance.com\/french-lakes\/lake-geneva\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">20,000 boats<\/a> moored on Lake Geneva, it\u2019s also home to L\u00e9XPLORE, a 10x10m pontoon that acts as a floating laboratory.<\/p>\n<p>Installed in 2019, this novel infrastructure is a unique partnership between five academic institutions, managed by the Limnology Center at the \u00c9cole Polytechnique F\u00e9d\u00e9rale de Lausanne (EPFL).<\/p>\n<p>The platform provides continuous lake measurements that are being used to assess the impact of global changes and monitor the lake\u2019s health.<\/p>\n<p>Guillaume Cunillera is the Chief Technical Officer of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lexplore.info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">L\u00e9XPLORE<\/a> platform. In this role, he leads the technical team and coordinates the research groups utilizing the floating laboratory.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, bored with office work, he applied for a technical role at the EPFL for the L\u00e9XPLORE platform. (Credit: Guillaume Cunillera)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">L\u00e9XPLORE Floating Platform<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/lexplore.info\/virtual-visit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">L\u00e9XPLORE platform<\/a> aims to provide a safe environment for deploying sensors both in the air and underwater at depths ranging from 0 to 110 meters. We can therefore measure at high spatial and temporal frequencies, at all depths and at all times, even at night or during storms.\u201d Cunillera explains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe offer various power supplies, internet access, a chemical flume, restroom facilities, and more. We ensure that scientists have everything they need to stay on the platform for a few hours or even several days,\u201d he continues.<\/p>\n<p>The platform features a \u201cwide range\u201d of sensors and vertical profilers\u2013installed on the platform or within the protection perimeter. Their uses fall into two broad categories.<\/p>\n<p>Firstly, \u201cThe Core dataset.\u201d This corresponds to all the fundamental parameters measured by L\u00e9XPLORE\u2019s instruments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat includes all the basic parameters with sensors that belong to us, that we maintain and calibrate,\u201d Cunillera says\u2013including a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/nexsens-t-node-fr-thermistor-string.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">temperature chain<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/products\/weather\/multi-parameter-sensors.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">weather station<\/a>, or <a href=\"http:\/\/fondriest.com\/sontek-m9-acoustic-doppler-profiler.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ADCPs<\/a>, for example.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll collected data is accessible through our data portal, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.datalakes-eawag.ch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Datalakes.ch<\/a>; this website is available to everyone\u2014scientists and local residents alike\u2014who may be interested [&#8230;]. For scientists, this resource is particularly beneficial as it allows them to focus on their specific research data while having easy access to essential background information,\u201d he emphasizes.<\/p>\n<p>Secondly, scientific projects. Cunillera outlines, \u201dWe host a variety of sensors used by different research groups, ranging from profilers, fish sonar, microplastic pumps, and more. (Credit: Guillaume Cunillera)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">The L\u00e9XPLORE Wave Buoy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Part of this impressive floating science platform is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexsens.com\/products\/data-buoys\/cb-450\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NexSens CB-450 buoy<\/a>. Equipped with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/seaview-systems-svs-603hr-wave-sensor.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SeaView Systems SVS-603HR sensor<\/a> and an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexsens.com\/products\/data-loggers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">X-Series data logger<\/a>, its primary purpose is to provide data on wave characteristics.<\/p>\n<p>The wave buoy was installed on the protection perimeter of the L\u00e9XPLORE platform between two secondary buoys, and was \u201cquite straightforward\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe NexSens system fits perfectly in our core data sets,\u201d Cunillera highlights, \u201cAnd several researchers need those data.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the buoy\u2019s SVS-603 takes hourly measurements. Over approximately 19 minutes, the sensor records over 2,000 data points, which are averaged and sent to the host modem on the platform. Data is translated and sent to the data portal. (Credit: Guillaume Cunillera)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Progressing Lake Science\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As with other data collected from the platform, buoy data can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.datalakes-eawag.ch\/datadetail\/885\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accessed on the Datalakes portal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Cunillera shares the manifold uses of the buoy data, starting with the platform\u2019s technical team, who use it \u201cto follow and have a better understanding of the [impacts of] strong wind and storm events on the infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scientists working on the <a href=\"https:\/\/lexplore.info\/current-projects\/wind2waves\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wind2Waves project<\/a>\u2013which studies the evolution of the directional wave energy spectrum\u2013use data from the buoy as well as that collected from their own system and sensors.<\/p>\n<p>Several other projects use the data, with research questions ranging from how to assess primary production in the lake through optical in-situ measurements and satellite observations, to investigating the relationship between temperature in the first few micrometers and centimeters of water depth, and understanding the carbon cycle and gas exchange at the air-water interface.<\/p>\n<p>Research undertaken at the platform and using data from its sensors has applications beyond Lake Geneva itself.<\/p>\n<p>With a long history of environmental monitoring, the L\u00e9XPLORE platform represents a cutting-edge advancement in data collection on Western Europe\u2019s largest lake.
