However, the lake is also notorious for occasionally suffering from poor water quality conditions, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/pushing-lake-science-upstream-agriculture-and-algal-blooms-at-lake-erie.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">harmful algal blooms and nutrient runoff<\/a>. Nonetheless, millions of people flock to its waters every year to enjoy all that the lake provides.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/greatlakes.guide\/watersheds\/erie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Great Lakes Guide<\/a>, Lake Erie is the most biodiverse of all the Great Lakes. Therefore, resources are poured into understanding Erie\u2019s ecosystem, water quality, and wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the Ohio Division of Wildlife (ODOW) has several research units spread across the state, and one of them, the Fairport Harbor Research Unit, monitors the lake\u2019s central basin.<\/p>\n<p>From trawl surveys to temperature profiles, the Fairport unit works to understand water quality conditions near and offshore in the center of America\u2019s fourth-largest lake, and how those conditions are impacting the fish that call it home.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_40263\" style=\"width: 950px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40263\" class=\"size-full wp-image-40263\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/BottomTrawlRetreival_ForWeb.jpg\" alt=\"ODNR Fairport Staff retrieving a bottom trawl. (Credit; ODNR)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Lake Erie Water Quality and Wildlife Monitoring Methods\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peter Jenkins has been a fisheries biologist at Fairport for the past three years and supervises several of their research surveys. One of these is a bottom trawl survey at fixed sites, where Jenkins searches for young of year and yearling yellow perch, which are a popular sport fish in Lake Erie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jenkins says this involves measuring and counting the perch, among other population monitoring approaches. This data is used to model 2-year-old perch recruitment, which has recently seen declines in the central basin, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mail.google.com\/mail\/u\/0?ui=2&amp;ik=65ea0d64b1&amp;attid=0.3&amp;permmsgid=msg-f:1842440702034590966&amp;th=1991aa0e8c7e3cf6&amp;view=att&amp;zw&amp;disp=inline&amp;acrobatPromotionSource=GmailAttachmentCard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ODOW\u2019s management process<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite this survey focusing on managing fish populations, Jenkins says that monitoring water quality is also a huge part of their fisheries management. In fact, water quality data is used to determine if trawls will be included in our annual recruitment indices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs the trawl is going, we cover approximately a half-mile stretch, and sometimes the beginning and end side will show different levels of hypoxia,\u201d Jenkins says. \u201cAnd so that really impacts our bottom trawl, because if there&#8217;s low enough DO, there aren&#8217;t going to be very many fish in the section of water that we&#8217;re trawling.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To detect hypoxic conditions, Jenkins and his colleagues used a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/ysi-proswap-digital-water-quality-meter.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YSI ProSwap sonde<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to collect water quality profiles. Additionally, they attach a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondriest.com\/pme-minidot-dissolved-oxygen-logger.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PME miniDOT logger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to obtain finer-scale data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, when his team is estimating population from the trawls, Jenkins will take the hypoxic areas into account. Fish are found at much lower levels in these hypoxic areas, so they will often exclude them from their abundance estimates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jenkins says hypoxic conditions in the central basin arise from the algal blooms that spread from the western basin. (Credit: ODNR)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Long-Term Water Quality Data Sets<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Data on the central basin\u2019s water quality conditions have benefited from decades of research. Along with the bottom trawl, Jenkins also supervises a long-term project surveying the lower trophic levels of the lake, understanding how water quality impacts phytoplankton and zooplankton.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you hear water quality as a fisheries biologist, you don&#8217;t exactly think it&#8217;s the most glamorous of the jobs, but it&#8217;s a very cool survey, and it&#8217;s a long time series,\u201d Jenkins says.<\/p>\n<p>Due to their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lakescientist.com\/research-brief-algae-and-zooplankton-relationships-in-lake-warnolty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dependence on water quality<\/a>, the phytoplankton surveys Jenkins conducts also focus on measuring water quality parameters, particularly temperature and dissolved oxygen, with a YSI ProSwap integrated with a depth sensor to take profiles of the lake.<\/p>\n<p>These measurements have gone back decades at Fairport. Using their own data and those of partner organizations, such as NOAA, the Fairport unit can see how temperature and dissolved oxygen have changed throughout the years.<\/p>\n<p>Jenkins explains that his office focuses on researching how annual and seasonal environmental trends correlate to fish recruitment.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, other organizations <a href=\"https:\/\/coastalscience.noaa.gov\/forecasting-and-modeling\/lake-erie-hypoxia-forecast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">such as NOAA <\/a>predict seasonal trends, like warmer, rainier springs leading to more hypoxic summers in the central basin. (Credit; ODNR)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Informing Recreation Through Research and Collaboration<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Beyond below-the-water surveys, Jenkins says that his colleagues will conduct <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fishsens.com\/university-of-nebraska-grad-student-compiles-comprehensive-population-count-of-channel-catfish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">creel surveys<\/a> on the lake and its tributaries. Division of Wildlife employees will talk with anglers face-to-face to understand what they\u2019re catching for these surveys. Jenkins says it&#8217;s a helpful method to fill research gaps for their population estimates.<\/p>\n<p>Anglers also benefit from <a href=\"https:\/\/odh.ohio.gov\/know-our-programs\/ohio-sport-fish-consumption-advisory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a third survey<\/a> that Jenkins supervises: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fishsens.com\/lake-michigan-salmon-pcbs-continue-to-drop-shifting-food-web-plays-a-role\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fish contamination<\/a>. Poor water quality can cause fish to digest or absorb harmful contaminants, which then make them unsafe for consumption. Fairport will send samples each year to labs to <a href=\"https:\/\/odh.ohio.gov\/know-our-programs\/ohio-sport-fish-consumption-advisory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">look for contaminants<\/a> in Lake Erie\u2019s fish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe send them off to different labs, and they test for contaminants in fish flesh, and then those [become] regulations or recommendations of how much fish you should eat,\u201d Jenkins says.<\/p>\n<p>Collaborating with other organizations drives Fairport\u2019s research, according to Jenkins. They don\u2019t exist on their own, but provide valuable baseline data for several organizations, and for other units within the ODOW.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFairport isn\u2019t out there raising, hatching, or stocking,\u201d Jenkins says. \u201cWe&#8217;re focused on assessing and managing fish populations along with recreational and commercial fisheries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alongside anglers and the ODOW, the province of Ontario works closely with Fairport to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glfc.org\/joint-strategic-plan-committees.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">manage their shared lake<\/a>. (Credit: Josh Zielinski)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Improving the Lake Erie Experience<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Ultimately, Jenkins says the goal of Fairport\u2019s research is to holistically improve the Lake Erie experience, which begins with understanding its wildlife and ecosystems. It matters less who uses the research, and more how it\u2019s applied to protect Ohio\u2019s largest lake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are striving, in general, to conserve and improve fishing and habitat for those fish for sustainable use and appreciation of everyone,\u201d Jenkins says. \u201cSo the more information that we can gather and know about the lake and provide to fishermen or people who just enjoy the lake and water quality, the better off the lake is.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lake Erie is well known for its sport fish populations and recreation on the water.
