The dam controlling the section of the Colorado River that flows through the Grand Canyon will soon allow periodic floods to mimic natural cycles and sediment flows, according to a report from the Associated Press.<\/p>\n

The new plan for Glen Canyon Dam calls for high-flow periods in the spring or fall that could range from one to 96 hours. The practice will restore sediment levels below the dam that benefit native species, build recreational beaches and protect archeological sites from erosion.<\/p>\n
