The Argonaut-XR offers exceptional value for near shore deployments in less than 20 m of water. Designed specifically for mounting on the bottom of a river, channel, or harbor, the XR features a special mode that automatically adjusts one of its measurement cells for changing water level. Its small size, rugged build, and flexible system architecture make the XR attractive for both real-time operation and autonomous deployments. The basic autonomous system includes a Multi-Cell (current profiling) feature, an external battery pack, internal recorder, compass/tilt sensor, pressure sensor, and temperature sensor. Additional options such as a non-directional wave package make the XR the centerpiece of a complete oceanographic or hydrologic data collection system.

  • Programmable 0.5 to 20m range
  • ViewArgonaut software
  • AutoTide - automatic sampling volume adjustments
  • Multi-Cell current profiling feature
  • Integrated compass, tilt, temperature, and pressure sensors
  • Optional wave frequency spectra estimation
  • SDI-12 compatible
  • Proven SonTek reliability

Harnessing the Gulf Stream for Renewable Energy

The Gulf Stream, the massive western boundary current off the east coast of North America, moves water from the Gulf of Mexico north and west across the Atlantic Ocean. There’s a lot of energy in that much moving water and researchers are trying to put it to use. Although the Gulf Stream’s path shifts (researchers say it acts like a wiggling garden hose), in a couple of spots, it stays relatively stable. At one such spot off the coast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, researchers have dropped moorings and research instruments to study the current with the eventual goal of harnessing it for renewable energy.

The Frozen Frontier: Chasing Data in Antarctica

For Paul Savoy, sailing on the Nathaniel B. Palmer research vessel as part of the United States Antarctic Program (USAP) has been a dream come true, a “mountain top” for his career. “I grew up reading about the age of exploration, and the great polar explorers back in the day. Antarctica is one of the last remaining frontiers, along with the deep ocean and outer space. I was delighted to discover Antarctic research covers all three, with deep ocean research happening on the icebreakers and cosmological experiments at the South Pole. I’ve been applying for a job down here since I was 18. I got shortlisted a few times, but never actually got picked up until I was 32. Now I’m 35, and finally headed to the ice.

New Environmental Sensors and Data Acquisition Knowledge Base

NexSens Technology has worked for over two decades to simplify complex environmental data acquisition systems. The core components of these systems have always been the development of data loggers, configuration and data management software, and simplified sensor integrations. NexSens is excited to bring a new dimension to another critical aspect of real-time environmental monitoring: environmental sensors and data acquisition documentation through the revamped online Knowledge Base. The Knowledge Base serves as a living library, featuring the most thorough information, start-up instructions, integration guides, and other documentation available for NexSens systems and products.
