The Vaisala GMP343 Carbon Dioxide Sensor is an accurate and rugged probe-type instrument for CO2 measurements. The body of the GMP343 is IP67-classified and suitable for harsh environments. The sensor's diffusion filter protects it from dust and dirt while heated optics prevent the formation of condensation.

Each GMP343 is calibrated using 0.5% accurate gases at seven points ranging from 0ppm to 2% CO2. Calibration is also done at four temperature points ranging from -30 C to 50 C. If desired, the customer can recalibrate the instrument using the multi-point calibration feature allowing up to 8 user-defined calibration points. The GMP343 offers internal temperature compensation and user-defined relative humidity, pressure and oxygen compensation.

The Vaisala GMP343 Carbon Dioxide sensor eliminates the need for bulky and power-consuming gas sampling systems. The use of diffusion aspiration eliminates the measurement error caused by pressure differences often present in pump-aspirated measurement systems. With low power consumption, the GMP343 can be used in both solar or AC powered applications.

Permafrost Carbon Thaws, Releases Quickly Into Environment

As climate change continues, an important question is what will happen when permafrost soils thaw and the large amounts of gases they store is released into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide and methane. Some scientists predict there will be a gradual permafrost carbon release, which will affect the current climate slowly and in a way that plant species adaptation will be able to counter. Other scientists predict the permafrost carbon release will be fast and increase the rate of global temperature rise. This could speed up permafrost thaw even more and have dramatic effects on Arctic ecosystems. In a recent study, Kim Wickland, a research ecologist at the U.S. Geological Survey, and her colleagues have found evidence that may support the latter hypothesis.

Global carbon dioxide emissions flatlined in 2014

Global carbon dioxide emissions went flat in 2014, according to The Guardian . The largest contributor to the flatline was a weak Chinese economy that looks to have canceled out emissions from strong economic growth elsewhere in the world. Still, officials with the International Energy Agency say that efforts to reduce emissions in China — like using more renewable energy sources like solar, wind and hydropower — may also have contributed to the reduction. “This is both a very welcome surprise and a significant one,” said Fatih Birol, the incoming executive director of the IEA, in a statement. “It provides much-needed momentum to negotiators preparing to forge a global climate deal in Paris in December.

Multi-paddock grazing gives gassy cattle a chance to help sequester carbon, study suggests

Ruminant livestock, including beef and dairy cattle, as well as goats and sheep, account for about 27 percent of methane production in the U.S., making them significant contributors to overall greenhouse gas production. An ongoing study from Arizona State University is exploring whether these same livestock might actually help sequester carbon from the atmosphere when managed under some innovative practices. Using a technique called adaptive multi-paddock grazing, farmers would delegate livestock to small fields for short periods of grazing. Livestock are ushered between a greater number of fields more frequently than in traditional management schemes, emulating the migratory habits of wild herd animals.
