The YSI 5000 Series saves time and increases efficiency with features such as auto calibration, large graphic display, and low-profile keypad. Microprocessor-based, YSI 5000 instruments will store 100 sets of data and are equipped with RS-232 interface for direct link to your computer. To make BOD measurements even easier, BOD Analyst software (5120) can also be purchased. The YSI 5000 Series is user upgradeable through the YSI web site, making it easy to take advantage of future software improvements.

The full-featured YSI 5100 instrument offers even greater performance and flexibility with auto calibration, an internal barometer, and built-in SOUR software to meet U.S. EPA 503 regulations for safe use of biosolids. OUR (Oxygen Uptake Rate) and SOUR (Specific Oxygen Uptake Rate) are also valuable process control tools because they indicate the biological activity of microorganisms used in treatment. The YSI 5100 can also be used with a barcode scanner, eliminating the need to manually maintain bench sheets. These tools greatly reduce the labor required for processing BODs and calculating BOD values.

Tracking Aquifer Water With Seismic Noise

In drought-stressed areas like California where every drop in the aquifer counts, seismic noise may be the key to monitoring water. Harvard University PhD student and principal investigator Tim Clements spoke to EM about this recent work, and how it might be a game changer for water watchers across the country. “The inspiration for this research was the historic drought in California from 2011 to 2017,” explains Clements. “This was the driest period in recorded history in the state.
