The LevelSender is a simple, low cost system designed to wirelessly send data from Solinst dataloggers in the field, via cellular communication, to multiple emails and an SMS recipient. You can receive data right on your smart device. LevelSender remote stations are compact in design, which allows them to be discreetly installed inside a 2" diameter monitoring well or other housing. Each LevelSender device has a single port to connect one datalogger. An optional splitter provides connections for two dataloggers, allowing you to install a Levelogger and Barologger in the same well. Along with water level, temperature, conductivity, barometric, or rainfall data, battery level and status updates from the remote LevelSender are received with each data report.

Initial setup for each LevelSender device is done using the LevelSender PC Software and a USB connection. The LevelSender is programmed with a sampling rate to collect data from the connected dataloggers, and a report rate to send data to the “Home Station”, and email and SMS recipients. If more detailed data is desired, the dataloggers can be programmed to record independently in their internal memory. Data is sent as text to each email and SMS recipient. Data is automatically saved on the Home Station PC in separate files, as well as a dynamically updated database. The database can be accessed using your own applications for posting to a website or other custom setup. Data can also be viewed in the LevelSender Software, or files can be exported for use in other programs. Changes to the reporting schedule can be done directly through a USB cable and LevelSender Software. Alternatively, remote schedule changes can be sent to individual LevelSender stations by email from the Home Station, which will update the LevelSender at a next scheduled report.

REASON Project Puts Water Quality Instrumentation in Dams

Where and how to monitor water quality is always a challenge, particularly in complex aquatic ecosystems. The new REASON Project from a team at Clarkson University is working to demonstrate the utility of using water quality instrumentation in dams on major rivers in the Great Lakes system. A Lesson in Persistence: Taking On Cyanobacteria in Florida

As we hear more and more about algal blooms of different kinds across the United States, teams of scientists are working hard to ensure that they don't become our new normal. One project in Florida is taking a multi-disciplinary approach to the problem—including genetic analysis. The team's work is part of a full-court press in Florida recently, making a serious push to understand what is triggering more frequent blooms. Keeping TABS on the Texas Gulf Coast

From extreme weather such as Hurricane Harvey to spills and other accidents, the Gulf Coast of Texas is no stranger to dangerous situations. This is where the data provided by the Texas Automated Buoy System ( TABS ) comes into the picture. Among the nation's most successful and longest-running coastal ocean-observing systems at the state level, the TABS real-time oceanographic buoy system monitors currents, waves, salinity, winds, and other parameters. Dr. Anthony Knap , director of Geochemical Environmental Research Group (GERG) and a Professor of Oceanography at Texas A&M University, spoke to EM about working with TABS. “TABS has been running now for 24 years,” explains Dr. Knap.
