The LevelSender is a simple, low cost system designed to wirelessly send data from Solinst dataloggers in the field, via cellular communication, to multiple emails and an SMS recipient. You can receive data right on your smart device. LevelSender remote stations are compact in design, which allows them to be discreetly installed inside a 2" diameter monitoring well or other housing. Each LevelSender device has a single port to connect one datalogger. An optional splitter provides connections for two dataloggers, allowing you to install a Levelogger and Barologger in the same well. Along with water level, temperature, conductivity, barometric, or rainfall data, battery level and status updates from the remote LevelSender are received with each data report.

Initial setup for each LevelSender device is done using the LevelSender PC Software and a USB connection. The LevelSender is programmed with a sampling rate to collect data from the connected dataloggers, and a report rate to send data to the “Home Station”, and email and SMS recipients. If more detailed data is desired, the dataloggers can be programmed to record independently in their internal memory. Data is sent as text to each email and SMS recipient. Data is automatically saved on the Home Station PC in separate files, as well as a dynamically updated database. The database can be accessed using your own applications for posting to a website or other custom setup. Data can also be viewed in the LevelSender Software, or files can be exported for use in other programs. Changes to the reporting schedule can be done directly through a USB cable and LevelSender Software. Alternatively, remote schedule changes can be sent to individual LevelSender stations by email from the Home Station, which will update the LevelSender at a next scheduled report.

Plenty of plastic in the Great Lakes

Despite the high profile of plastic pollution in the ocean, the same problem in the Great Lakes is not well understood. “Believe it or not, we’re kind of in the early stages of understanding plastic pollution in the Great Lakes,” said Sherri Mason, sustainability coordinator and professor of chemistry at Penn State—Behrend . She’s one author of research published in January in the Journal of Great Lakes Research examining the levels of plastic in Lake Erie and, for the first time, Lake Ontario.  [bctt tweet="The research revealed the highest level of plastic pollution in any of the Great Lakes occurs in Lake Ontario. Lake Erie was a distant second.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institutes Wireless Plan to Connect to MARS

Engineers and scientists that specialize in aquatic measuring practices always meet extra costs on the path to deployment. Maybe it is the corrosive nature of the saltwater, or the unbearable pressure tools must be equipped to handle while lying on the ocean floor. For anyone interested in hooking up with the MARS (Monterey Accelerated Research System) Observatory , which rests dozens of miles off the California coastline, the costs extend further. They get so high that only well-funded universities and governmental agencies can afford to connect with the underwater power and data hub. Hoping to lower that cost, engineers with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute ( MBARI ) constructed a wireless device called Deep-Sea Connect.

With Cameras and Artificial Intelligence, Fishing Vessels are Becoming Smarter

During an electronic monitoring conference in February, fisheries managers and fishermen watched a squiggly purple line meander across the screen. It was mapping the journey a tuna fish was taking, from being caught and landing across the deck of a fishing vessel. Leigh Habegger, executive director for Seafood Harvesters of America , a national commercial fishing group, said everyone in the crowd had their eyes glued to the screen. “It was fascinating, it was really cool,” she added.  The graphic was the manifestation of a machine-learning tool that was trained to follow where a fish ended up after it was caught.
